Translation Studies Diary of 30 July, 2024

I would like to write about the difference between laws and universals.

Toury's methodology involves a procedure that relates segments of target texts to their source texts.
Chesterman explores the links between Toury's law and different types of universals and proposes the following distinctions:
(1) ‘S-universals’: these relate to ‘universal differences between a translation and its source text’.
(2) ‘T-universals’: these are features of the translated language in comparison with the naturally existing language, irrespective of the source language.

Chesterman can be said to have added to the law the perspective of studying between translated and naturally occurring texts, irrespective of the source language.
