Translation Studies Diary of June 19, 2024 (2)

I would like to talk about 'Descriptive Translation Studies', which was developed by Gideon Toury.
He was an Israeli translation scholar who mainly researched the history of Hebrew translations of the Bible.

He devoted himself to developing a general theory of translation.
In particular, he proposed three-phase methodology for systematic Descriptive Translation Studies.

  1. Locate the text within the target culture

  2. Identify corresponding segments in the original and translated texts

  3. Attempt to generalise about the patterns between the two texts

He used the above methods to identify the 'universals' of translation. Leaving aside the pros and cons, his emphasis on translation itself made him an essential figure in the development of translation studies.
