Venuti states that invisibility is created in the translations of translators who are conscious of their ‘fluency’:
He further discusses invisibility in close relation to two types of translation: domesitication and foreignization.

Domesitication refers to translating in a transparent, fluent and ‘invisible’ style in order to minimise the foreignness of the target language.
Foreignisation, in contrast, aims to ‘send the reader abroad’ by making the recipient aware of the linguistic and cultural differences inherent in the foreign language text.

This is achieved through a non-fluent, alienating or alien translation style designed to make the translator's presence visible and emphasise source text's foreign identity, which Venuti favoured because this is a way to counter the unequal and domesticating values.
