Roman Jakobson is a Russian-American linguist.
Jakobson introduced three categories into translation studies.
-intralingual translation
-interlingual translation
-intersemiotic translation
In addition, Jakobson stressed that it is sometimes possible to understand what a word means, even if one has never seen or experienced the concept or thing in real life. He also noted that there is no perfect equivalence between linguistic units.
He was influenced by Saussure, who in turn influenced Chomsky.
