Joachim Wach: the forgotten man behind Gendlin’s understanding of Dilthey

I gave a presentation to a study group in June. Slides from that day are uploaded here.

Title:
Joachim Wach: the forgotten man behind Gendlin’s understanding of Dilthey

Abstract:
In his later writings, Gendlin frequently refers to the understandability of people between different cultures. He repeatedly states that he owes the basis for such understandability to Dilthey. In fact, however, I consider that he owes this to Joachim Wach, who taught Dilthey's philosophy to Gendlin, rather than to Dilthey. This is because Wach, who raised the question “Might not congenial understanding have its limits?" seems closer to Gendlin’s view, rather than Dilthey, who argued that “All individual differences are not in the last analysis determined by qualitative differences among persons."
