G7 Tightens Economic Sanctions Against Russia, Targeting Crypto Assets
On November 11, the Group of Seven (G7) major economies, including Japan, issued a joint statement on economic sanctions against Russia. It was learned that crypto assets were included in the sanctions.
The statement said, "We have already isolated Russia and are united in our determination to hold President Putin and his regime accountable for this unjust war. The world should unite to demand that President Putin and his regime immediately halt the ongoing aggression against Ukraine and withdraw their troops."
Regarding economic sanctions, he explained that "since President Putin launched his invasion of the Russian Federation on February 24, we have imposed restrictive measures that have caused significant damage to the Russian economic and financial system, as can be seen from the massive market reaction."
He added, "We have isolated Russia's major banks from the global financial system and blunted the ability of the Russian central bank to utilize its foreign exchange reserves. These measures target Russian President Vladimir Putin and his accomplices, as well as the Lukashenko regime in Belarus," he said, indicating that he would be strengthening economic sanctions.
The announcement also said that economic sanctions will be strengthened in seven ways, including the withdrawal of MFN treatment on key products and the denial of access to loans from international financial institutions. Crypto assets were included among them.
Specifically, the following sanctions are being strengthened.
Revocation of Russia's MFN status
Blocking loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other international financial institutions
Continued sanctions against sanctioned individuals and entities
Monitor the use of crypto assets and other digital assets to evade sanctions
Dealing with disinformation spread by Russia
Restrict imports and exports of critical products and technologies
Suppression of financing capacity
The statement said, "We are committed to maintaining the effectiveness of our economic sanctions, strengthening our policing, and closing loopholes. Specifically, in addition to other measures designed to prevent sanctions evasion, we will ensure that the Russian state and its elites, proxies, and oligarchs (emerging conglomerates) cannot use digital assets as a means to circumvent or offset international sanctions and further restrict access to the global financial system." It was said.
The G7 added that "it is generally understood that our sanctions also target crypto assets," and that they are committed to preventing the use of crypto and digital assets to evade sanctions.
He concluded, "We continue to stand with the Ukrainian people and the Ukrainian government. We will continue to assess the impact of our measures, including on third countries, and stand ready to take further steps to hold President Putin and his regime accountable for their aggression against Ukraine," he concluded.
Also. The Ukrainian government is launching a NFT (non-replacement token) collection to raise funds, and the NFTs will be digital art representing the history of the Russian invasion, The Guardian reported on March 13.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, the Ukrainian government has been collecting donations from all over the world in the form of crypto assets (virtual currency) such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, and the donations already received exceed $60 million (approximately 7 billion yen).
In addition, the donations sent to Ukraine include NFTs of "CryptoPunk" worth $200,000 (about 23.5 million yen). The funds raised were used to purchase weapons, night vision goggles, bulletproof vests, and other items, as well as medicine and food.
The NFT collection announced this time is another measure to counter Russia's invasion of Ukraine using the blockchain.
According to Alex Bornyakov, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation, each NFT in the collection will be like a museum that represents the story of a trusted news distributor. He commented, "We want cool, good-looking NFTs, and it will take time to make that happen."
No specific date has been given for the launch of the NFT from the Ukrainian government. Bornyakov added that Ukraine's "digital diplomacy" has also been effective in subduing Russia.
In response to the Ukrainian government's request, Facebook and other social media now have restrictions that block Russian state media, including "Russia Today" and "Sputnik."
He informed that "we have convinced social media platforms and international companies to block Russia, withdraw from Russia, or change their information policies completely.
