36.  AT THE CONVENIENCE STORE

 Kiriko goes shopping. There is Kobayashi over the stock. She suddenly gets wise.

       Kiriko:  Mr. Kobayashi?
Kobayashi:  Oh, it’s me.

 Kobayashi finds her and gives a bow.

Kobayashi:  Ahhh… Thank you.
       Kiriko:  Umm… is this a birthday cake?

 Kobayashi brings a box of cakes in hand.

Kobayashi:  Ah… no. Not mine. It’s for my friend.
       Kiriko:  Oh, happy birthday to your friend.
Kobayashi:  Thanks.

 Kiriko gives a bow and goes away from him.

37.　ON THE DARK ROAD

 Kiriko is walking.

      Kiriko:  Mr. Kobayashi. To tell the truth, I didn’t have any opportunity
                   to watch your movie. Yesterday, I watched “Onimokubi”. At
                   the audition, I will tell a lie clearly. “I have been a fan for a
                   long time.”

38.  SAKI’S HOUSE, IN THE DINING KITCHEN

  Masumi and Ryuta are drinking a glass of beer in the dining room.

 Masumi:   Umm… if Kiriko passes this audition so well, we will decide to
                  marry for her celebration.
    Ryuta:   Oh, you do.
 Masumi:   Makoto will be pleased with us.
     Ryuta:   You think so?

 Kiriko comes home.

    Kiriko:    I’m home.
Masumi:    Here she is. Where did you go for?
    Kiriko:    For convenience store.
Masumi:    You didn’t buy anything.
   Kiriko:    Tomorrow!
Masumi:    What?

 Kiriko goes away.

Masumi:   Kiriko?
   Ryuta:    Kiriko?

 Masumi and Ryuta are running after Kiriko.

39.  ON THE ROAD, IN FRONT OF POST D

 Ryuta, Masumi, and Kiriko are putting their envelopes on the post.

Masumi:   If you fail, give up on being an actress.
   Ryuta:   She doesn’t give up, our sweetheart.

Kiriko starts to walk quickly.

Masumi:   Kiriko!
    Ryuta:   Hey!

Masumi and Ryuta go along with Kiriko.

Masumi:   Take your time. Take your time.

Kiriko looks forward and keeps walking on.

40.  SAKI’S HOUSE, SOMEWHERE

Masumi:   (On the telephone) Uh, huh. Good. Uh, thank you so much. I’d
                  appreciate it.

Masumi hangs up the telephone.

Masumi:    Kiriko! You pass the audition.
    Ryuta:   Oh! Really! Oh, you did it!
Masumi:    What a relief!

Kiriko isn’t pleased about it. She just looks up forward.

　小林：　あぁ～ありがとうございます
　切子：　あ、お誕生日ですか？

　小林、手にケーキを持っている。

　小林：　あ、これ、俺のじゃなくて、知人の
　切子：　あ、お誕生日おめでとうございます
　小林：　どうも

　礼をして去っていく切子。

37、　夜道

　切子、歩いている。

　切子：　小林監督、あなたの映画は実は一度も見たことがありませんでし
　　　　　た。昨日やっと『鬼の首』を見ました。オーディション会場では
　　　　　はっきり言って嘘つきます。”昔からのファンです”って

 38、　咲家・ダイニング

　ダイニングでビールを飲んでいるますみと竜太。

　ますみ：　ねえ、切子がさ、うまくいって合格したらさ、もう、お祝いに
　　　　　　私たちも結婚するか
　　竜太：　おお、ついに
　ますみ：　マコトさんも喜んでくれる
　　竜太：　そうかぁ？

　帰ってくる切子。

　　切子：　ただいま
　ますみ：　おかえり、どこ行ってたの
　　切子：　コンビニ行ってた
　ますみ：　何にも買ってないじゃん
　　切子：　明日！
　ますみ：　は？

　切子、行ってしまう。

　ますみ：　切子？
　　竜太：　切子ちゃん？

　切子を追いかけるますみと竜太。

39、　路上・ポストDの前

　竜太、ますみ、切子が封筒を投函している。

　ますみ：　これで落ちたら諦めてよね
　　竜太：　諦めるわけねぇよ、この子は

　サッサと歩き出す切子。

　ますみ：　切子！
　　竜太：　おい。

　切子についていくますみと竜太。

　　竜太：　大丈夫かな～
　ますみ：　ゆっくり行こう。もっとゆっくり行こうよ

　前を向いて歩き続ける切子。

40、　咲家・とある場所

　ますみ：　（電話口で）はいはい、ありがとうございます。はい、ありが
　　　　　　　とうございます。よろしくお願いします

　ますみ、受話器を置く。

　ますみ：　切子！オーディション受かったって。
　　竜太：　ええ！本当に！え！やったー！
　ますみ：　よかったー！

　切子、喜びもせず、前を見つめている。

NOTES

　■　to tell the truth
　「実を言うと」という意味。正直なことを伝えるときに使う。
　ex) Sorry. To tell the truth, I ate your lemon cake yesterday. 「ごめん。実はさ、昨日のレモンケーキ食べちゃったんだ。」という具合に。

　■　I have been a fan for a long time
　have＋過去分詞で表される現在完了形を用いている。「昔からずっとファンであり続けている」という継続用法を使ったもの。

　■　sweetheart
　「愛しの子」。ますみと竜太が深い愛情を注ぐ「愛娘」を思う気持ちが込められている。
　ex)　Hurry up, sweetheart! You have a picnic at the school. 「急いで！学校で遠足があるんでしょ。」この場合、sweetheartは訳さない。

　■　What a relief
　reliefは「安心・安全」。ますみが娘のオーディション合格を受け、ほっと胸をなでおろした時の心情を表現している。
