大内順子女史は、日本初のファッションジャーナリストです。日本で初めて海外のファッションコレクションを直撃取材して、日本初のファッション専門テレビ番組『ファッション通信』を開設しました。
Ms. Juniko Ouchi is Japan's first fashion journalist. She conducted the first on-site coverage of overseas fashion collections in Japan and launched Japan's first fashion-focused television program, "Fashion Tsushin" (Fashion Communication).
「ファッションは楽しい！」
順子は、生物学者の父親・大内義郎の次女として中華民国上海市で生まれます。上海の中でも特に美しいと言われたフランス租界にある上海自然科学研究所内の父の研究室を、順子は姉・栄子と一緒に度々のぞきに行きます。広大な敷地はまるで美しい公園のように芝生・並木・築山があり、大きな煉瓦造りの建物の中の冷たい石造りの長い廊下の先にある二部屋続きの部屋、研究室のドアの外にある大きな戸棚の扉を開くと、大きな大きな花のように鮮やかな色のおびただしい数の美しい蝶の標本。蝶や昆虫の採取に出かけた父からは度々順子と姉に押し花の便りが届きます。母・不二子は土木工学博士・眞田秀次の次女として生まれたお嬢様育ち、いつもワンピースを着てコーディネートについて娘2人にファッション談義「魔法の黒いベルトよ」、フォックスの毛皮を着てシャベル片手に花壇の手入れ「冬の庭仕事には毛皮が一番だわ」、たまの外出から帰宅するとソファに寝そべって娘2人に蓄音機を回させ香水を振りかけさせ「良い香りと音楽が一番の薬」、研究所の暗室を使って趣味のカメラの現像をします。まもなく日中戦争が始まると順子は母と姉と共に帰国。神戸、大阪、岡山など疎開先を転々とし、戦後は父方の実家である福岡県八女郡白木村に移り住み、父・義郎の愛知大学創設に伴い家族で愛知県豊橋市に転居します。姉は洋裁学校を卒業すると地元の洋裁店からデザインナーの才能を見込まれオファーが殺到。順子は青山学院大学文学部英米文学科に入学すると、翌月には画家で舞台美術家・宮内裕に銀座でスカウトされます。順子は裕と学生結婚をする一方、『婦人画報』で雑誌やファッションショーのモデルとして活躍し始めます。順子はアーティストである夫に美意識について叩き込まれながら、アメ横に足しげく通ってはコーディネート用の洒落た靴・アクセサリー・レースの綺麗なランジェリーなど買い集め、撮影時にはそれらを大きな荷物に抱えてスタジオに向かいます。まもなく「暮らしもファッションも心も美しくあれ」と世に問うた芸術家・中原淳一のお気に入りモデルとなり、雑誌『それいゆ』に『中原淳ファッションショー』に出演するようになり、順子はファッションの世界にのめりこみます。
「ファッションの感動を伝えたい！」
あるときエジプト開催『国際コットンフェア』のショーモデルの仕事が舞い込みます。エジプトからローマに渡ってヨーロッパを周遊する中で、順子はパリで見たファッションコレクションの楽しさを日本に伝えたいと思い立ちます。その矢先の20代半ばの夏、順子は交通事故で眼窩や頬骨に大怪我を負い右目の視力を失います。モデルからファッション・ライターに転身して、大きなサングラスを着用しながら、ファッションコラムの執筆で活躍します。3年間子育てを優先させた順子は夫の理解と支えのもとで、夫のファッション関係の知人を介して、パリのファッションの最新情報を集め始めます。取材嫌いで有名なジバンシーのインタビューにも成功します。まもなく『家庭画報』の編集長の後押しを受け、順子は日本で初めてChanelのマドモアゼルのアパルトマンを見せてもらい、オートクチュールの仮縫シーンを撮影します。エルメスでは社長のインタビューはじめ工房、かつての王たちのために作られた乗馬服・ブーツの色見本・皮見本・王たちのサインがとじられたオーダーブックまで見せてもらいます。たちまち大反響を呼んで隔月連載になり、イタリアから北欧のショップまで取材を敢行します。次に順子はファッション動画を撮影しようと思い立ち、ソニー会長夫人の協力のもとパリのSonyから機材を借り、パリ在住のアメリカ人のカメラマンとエンジニアの二人をアルバイトで雇います。パリとミラノのコレクション取材を自前で編集、原稿を添えてNHKに持ち込み、朝30分の番組枠で紹介します。すると主婦でなく働く男女に見てもらいたい順子は、なじみのTBS女性ディレクターならびに森英恵の夫の後押しを受け『ファッション通信』を深夜枠で放映開始します。資生堂の後援を引き出し、海外コレクションのバックステージでデザイナーにマイクを突きつけながらヨーロッパの階級社会に人脈を広げ、世界各地のファッション情報を臨場感たっぷりに伝え続けます。
"Fashion is fun!"
Juniko was born in Shanghai, China, as the second daughter of her father, Yoshiro Ouchi, a biologist. Her father's laboratory was located in the French Concession of Shanghai, known for its exceptional beauty within the city. Juniko and her sister often peeked into the laboratory, situated beyond a long, cold stone corridor inside a large brick building, surrounded by expansive grounds resembling a beautiful park with lawns, tree-lined paths, and artificial hills. Inside the laboratory, upon opening the door of a large cupboard just outside the lab's entrance, they would discover an abundance of beautifully preserved butterfly specimens, vividly colored like large flowers. Their father, who went on collecting expeditions for butterflies and insects, frequently sent pressed flowers to Juniko and her sister as updates. As the Sino-Japanese War began, Juniko returned to Japan with her mother and sister. They moved to various evacuation locations such as Kobe, Osaka, and Okayama. After the war, they settled in the hometown of her father's family, Shiraki Village in Yame District, Fukuoka Prefecture. Following the establishment of Aichi University by her father, Yoshiro, the family moved to Toyohashi City in Aichi Prefecture. Soon after, Juniko enrolled in the English Literature Department at Aoyama Gakuin University. The following month, she was scouted by the painter and stage designer Yutaka Miyauchi in Ginza. While entering into a student marriage with Miyauchi, Juniko began her career as a model for magazines and fashion shows in "Fujin Gahō" (Women's Illustrated). She quickly became an active model, catching the attention of the artist Junichi Nakahara, known for his plea to the world for beauty in life, fashion, and the heart. Juniko became Nakahara's favorite model, participating in the "Nakahara Jun Fashion Show" featured in the magazine "Soreiyu." She immersed herself in the world of fashion.
"Fashion is emotional!"
One day, Juniko receives an opportunity to work as a show model at the "International Cotton Fair" held in Egypt. While touring Europe, traveling from Egypt to Rome, she decides that she wants to convey the excitement of the fashion collections she witnessed in Paris back to Japan. In her mid-20s, during the summer, Juniko is involved in a traffic accident that results in serious injuries to her eye socket and cheekbone, causing her to lose vision in her right eye. Transitioning from a model to a fashion writer, Juniko continues to thrive while wearing large sunglasses to conceal her injuries. Encouraged by the chief editor of "Kateigaho" magazine, she becomes the first person in Japan to be shown Chanel's Mademoiselle apartment and captures scenes from the haute couture fitting sessions. At Hermès, she receives special access to interviews with the president, visits the workshops, and explores everything from color samples for riding outfits and boots made for former kings to order books sealed with royal signatures. Her articles quickly gain popularity, leading to a bimonthly column, and she conducts interviews from Italy to Nordic shops. Next, Juniko decides to venture into fashion videos. With the support of the wife of Sony's chairman, she borrows equipment from Sony in Paris, hires an American photographer and engineer based in Paris as part-timers, and personally edits footage from Paris and Milan fashion collections. She presents the edited material along with manuscripts to NHK and secures a 30-minute time slot in the morning. However, aiming to reach a working audience rather than housewives, Juniko, with the backing of a familiar TBS female director and the support of Hanae Mori's husband, starts airing "Fashion Tsushin" in a late-night time slot. Sponsored by Shiseido, she expands her network in European high society, sticking microphones in front of designers backstage at international collections, and continues to convey fashion information from around the world with a vivid sense of presence.
