Beauty Japanはミスコンではありません。

ジェンダーについて勉強している友だちから、Beauty Japanについて、こんなことを言ってもらいました。

なんで"ミスコン"に出るのかな？Beauty Japanという"ミスコン"の柱として「社会性」が含まれていたので、どのように思っているのかお聞きしたいな〜と！

実際のメッセージでは、ミスコンに" "は付いていなくって、わたしが付けました。というのも、Beauty Japanはミスコンではないから。

今日は、Beauty Japanの社会的意義に対して、わたしがどう捉えているか話します。

ミスコンの定義って？

まず、Beauty Japanはミスコンではないよ〜というのをお伝えするにあたって、そもそもミスコンとは何か、確認したいと思います。

ミスコンは、ミス・コンテストの略称なんだけれど、明確に世界で共通して定義されているものではないです。でも、一般的な認識というのはあって、それをベースとした様々なミスコンが存在しています。
ということで、Wikipediaを参考にするんだけど、こんなふうに書いてあります。

ミス・コンテストとは、ミスの敬称が示す通り独身女性の美を競うイベント。一般的には容姿を基準に審査員が優劣を決めるため、コンテストの上位入賞者は美人の肩書きを得ることになる。日本語では「ミスコン」と省略されたり、「美人コンクール」と呼ばれたりもする。英語に基づいた表現として「ビューティー・ページェント」を用いる場合もある。(Wikipedia 日本語)

ちなみに英語だと、伝統的には、女性の身体的美をランク付けするコンテストとして始まっていて、ただし今日まで身体的美だけでなく、知性や出場者の個性、スキル、審査員の質問に対する回答なども考慮されるように進化してきよ〜といったことが書いてあります。

Beauty Japanは社会課題を解決したい女性を発掘するコンテスト

Beauty Japanは、これまでのミスコンとは異なります。まず、審査内容が異なるし、コンテストとして果たしたい社会的意義が異なります。

審査内容は、"真に社会で活躍できる女性"であるか。表面的な美ではなく、むしろ知性やキャリア、ビジョンが中心。

また、社会といってもいろんな側面があるし、関わり方も様々あるという点で、
Beauty / Career / Sociality / Independent Entertainment / Fashion /Culture
の７つの観点が設けられています。(Beauty Japan Official Site)

グランプリや準グランプリなど、ランク付けをする意義=Beauty Japanの社会的意義？

Beauty Japanは、ファイナリスト一人一人の個性を良しとし、それぞれのキャリアや社会に対する活動や事業を応援します。

それって、同じ枠にわたしたちを当てはめようとしているということは決してなく、むしろ多様性を発信しています。

そこで、わたしがふと浮かんだ疑問が、「じゃあ、何でグランプリとか準グランプリとか、いるの？」ってことでした。一人一人違うので、そもそも比べることって難しい、というかできなくない？って。

それで、考えてみてたどり着いたのが、Beauty Japanはグランプリや準グランプリを通じて、Beauty Japan自体の社会的意義を果たそうとしているのでは！と。

Beauty Japanのグランプリと準グランプリとなる2人って、ステージが異なる2人になるのかなと思っています。

一方は、すでに社会課題解決となる事業を行っていて、社会的地位をある程度得ている女性で、
もう一方は、まだ社会的に何かを成せているわけではないけど、使命感や熱量があり、今まさにその途上にいる、または踏み出した段階の女性

だと、わたしは予測しています。なぜなら、

Beauty Japanは、社会課題を解決したい女性のキャリア形成を支援し、女性の社会的進出を増やすコンソーシアム

だから。

コンソーシアム(Consortium)には、「複数の組織が集まり共通の目的を持ち活動する集団」という意味があります。(ビズキャリonline)

Beauty Japanって、ファイナリストの中から、No.1とNo.2を選出したいんじゃなくて、「わたしたちファイナリストは、社会課題を解決する・したいと思っている人の集団であって、Beauty Japanとして集まり、社会課題を解決しようとする人をさらに増やしていこうという目的のもと活動するコンソーシアム（Beauty Japan）」なのでは、と。

すでに社会に何か事業を起こしていて、キャッシュを生み出せるサイクルを作れている人=グランプリになる人は、
これからどんどん行動しよう！としている人たちに自らの経験をもとに伝えられることがあって、Beauty Japan 2020をリードしてくれる人なのでは？

今まさに一歩踏み出した、途上のタイミングの人=準グランプリになる人は、
社会にそういう人をもっと増やしていけるようなポテンシャル・波及効果のある人なのでは？

このコンテストの評価の中心は、「ファイナリストの美しい生き方や使命、これまでや現在のキャリア、そしてこれからのストーリー」です。

これまでという「過去」だけでなく、「未来」にも焦点を当てているわけです。

国際協力・慈善活動を発信する女性になれるという点で、今までもミスコンには興味がありました。

わたしは、ベトナムに住んだ経験から、高校・大学とずっと国際協力に関心を持ち、学生団体とかで活動をしてきたから、
あと、「モデル」の仕事とか、人の前に立って「発信」したいという思いがあったから、
従来型のミスコンにも興味がありました。

でもBeauty Japanを知ってから、これ一本でやりたい！って感覚があったんだ、そのときは言語化できなかったけど、強いものを感じた。

何かを発信するにも、知名度ってわたしはすごく大事にしていて、そういう意味ではよく知られているミスコンの方が良いとは思うんだけれど、

わたしはBeauty Japanがいいってすごく思った。広く発信する上でも、むしろ本質的であるか、自分の信念に通じているかで重なる場所を選ぶ方が、わたしに対する信頼というのは少しずつでもしっかりとついてきてくれるのではないかなって。そういう出逢いが好きだなって。

それでもやっぱり、ランクづけってむずかしくない？

Beauty Japanはコンソーシアムだから、グランプリ・準グランプリを通じて、Beauty Japanの社会的意義を果たしたいんだ！ということなんだけど、
やっぱり、ランクづけってむずかしいって思うところ。

これはつまり、ランクづけ自体はすごく重要なのではなくて、Beauty Japanってこんなものですよ〜ってことを、社会に分かりやすく発信する、つまり認知してもらう上で、一人とか二人とかピックアップする。ある意味、合理的・効率的だからだと思います。

じゃあ、なんで女性だけに絞るのかな？
という疑問がまだ残っているんだけど、それに対する自分なりの解はまた整理したいなあ。ジェンダーを学んできた友人と、それこそ意見交換したい！

Beauty Japanに「携わる」という意識で。

わたしは、東京大会のファイナリストとして出場します。そこでは、存分に自分の可能性を発揮したいと思う。

それから、Beauty Japanに携わっているという意識も大切にしたいです。コンソーシアムの一員として、周りに波及していけるよう、来年のファイナリストになりたい！と思う人が増えるよう、Beauty Japanの価値や、ファイナリストとして活動することで、自分にどんな気づきが返ってくるか、SNS発信で気をつけたこと等、発信していきます。

わたしは、今まさに一歩踏み出した、途上の人！そして、その周りからそういう人を増やしていける人！になれるよう頑張ります。

な〜んもない、今。

でも、過去や未来が、ある。

自分が今持てるもので、出し切るんだよ。

In this note, I would like to talk about what Beauty Japan is from social aspect comparing with other traditional miss contests. I think that Beauty Japan is a consortium that encourage women in Japan who would like to solve social issues by spreading the examples of those or those who will be.

Before I explain my understanding of Beauty Japan, I would like to explain what miss contest is? There is no one certain explanation of it. But there is a kind of a common understanding around the world and that has been a base for such contests.

So here, I picked up Wikipedia,

Beauty Japan is a contest that want to find those who have potential to be involved in solving problems in the world. Thus it is different from traditional miss contests and therefore judgment criteria is different, too.

This contest see its finalists whether they could be involved in a society, really.

There are 7 aspects like:
Beauty / Career / Sociality / Independent Entertainment / Fashion /Culture.

Well, still it is difficult or even impossible to clarify, I reckon. So I thought about it, why Beauty Japan is a contest? Why does it produce grand prix?

In my idea, Beauty Japan wants to spread its own social value and movement by picking one or two of its finalists, so that those who hear about it even a little piece of it.

To sum up, Beauty Japan is a contest but more like a consortium where there are people who've been dealing with social issues already or trying to right now, and we gather here in a same purpose of increasing those who could take ownership of our world.
