I was chanting of sutra four days from New Year's Eve to New Year at a Jodo Shinshu temple where a Buddhist priest was looking after me.

In New Year's Eve, Joyae, I was chanting of Hanjusan-sutra and participated in a candle event. Sutras are written records of Sakyamuni Buddha's teaching. Sutra of Hanjusan is an underlying scripture of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist tradition and was written by Zendo Taishi who a Chinese Buddhist priest. Candles are set up outdoors every year on New Year's Eve to entertain busy people. However, it was installed in the main hall due to strong winds in this time.

For the three days of the new year, Gantane, I was chanting of Sutras, Sanbutsuge and Genseriyakuwasan. Sutra of Sanbutsuge is an underlying scripture of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist tradition and was written by Ko SoGai who an Indian Buddhist priest. And, sutra of Genseriyakuwasan is an important teachings of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist tradition and was written by Shinran Shonin. Shinran shonin is the founder of the Jodo Shinshu teaching. He was a Buddhist  priest during the 13th century. 2023 will make the 850th anniversary of his birth. Shinran Shonin taught us about the Buddha named Amida, who aspires to save us who constantly suffer from our own self-centered desires. Amida's compassion embraces and guides us to become a Buddha. By sharing the Jodo Shinshu teaching, Shinran Shonin encourages us to recite the Buddha's Name, Namo Amida Butsu, in appreciation. It is "Sinjin" what an important teaching of Shinran Shonin in Genseriyakuwasan. "Sinjin", entrusting heart, is not about believing in the Buddha but listening to the Buddha's heart. The Buddha's heart does not change like a human heart, but the heart that says, "I am affirming everyone and I will stay close to you without change."
