【通訳案内士】Setsubun 節分の日

もう過ぎてしまいましたが、二月三日は節分の日でした。恵方巻を食べたり、豆まきをしたりしますが、地域によっては鰯を食べたり、「福は内、鬼も内」と言う風習のある所（地域名に鬼が付いたり、苗字に鬼が入る一族など）もあるそうです。
立春の前の日とされていて、お茶摘みの歌にある「夏も近づく八十八夜」とは、この立春から八十八日（およそ、ゴールデンウイークぐらい）の事です。
海外の方にはなじみが薄いかもしれませんが、その分、日本文化を象徴できるイベントではないでしょうか？

Setsubun 節分

In Japan, 3rd of February is regarded as “Setsubun”. Setsubun means “separate seasons” and it is a day that boderlines winter and spring. In Japanese calendar, spring begins from 4th of February.
日本では二月三日は節分の日とされています。節分とは季節を分けるといういみで、冬と春の境目となる日です。暦では二月四日から春が始まるとされています。

We have some events on this day. The famous one is “mame-maki” which means “throw beans” (in this case, dried soy beans are thrown). From ancient times, we think that ogres and evils appear in this season. So, we can get rid of those by throwing beans. We can also dispel ogres by putting a decoration of holly and sardine head on the entrance door.
In some places, ogres are considered as object of faith and are welcomed.
この日には、特徴的なイベントがあります。一番有名なものは豆まきです。昔は、季節の変わり目に鬼や邪気が出てくると考えられており、豆をまくことで鬼を退治できると考えられていました。柊に鰯の頭をつけるのも厄除けになると言われています。地域によっては、鬼を信仰の対象としているところがあり、こういった地域では鬼を迎え入れます。

We eat some special cuisines on Setsubun as a repellent and for good luck. For example, ogres dislike the smell of fishes. So, we eat sardines and we decorate the head of sardines at the entrance. And we eat the number of dried soy beans according to our age so that we can be healthy throughout the year. Eho-maki is rolled sushi and it is considered to be auspicious if you eat it on this day. (When you eat beans, please don’t swallow it. Please bite and eat carefully.)
厄除け、縁起かつぎとして、特別な食べ物を食べたりします。例えば、鬼は魚のにおいが嫌いなので、鰯をたべて、その残った頭を玄関に置いて厄除けとします。また、豆まきの豆を歳の数だけ食べると、その年は健康に過ごせます。恵方巻という、巻物の寿司をたべて縁起担ぎをしたりします。（豆を食べるときは飲み込まないで、よく噛んで食べて下さい。）

Setsubun is a milestone of the calendar. In the old (lunar) calendar, it is considered as the beginning of the year, too. From Setsubun, sunlight hours are getting longer and spring begins. Eighty-eight days from Setsubun is considered as the begging of summer. In Shizuoka, tea plant farmers start picking up tea leaves.
この日は季節の節目で、旧暦ではこの日を新年とするところもありました。節分からだんだんと日が伸びはじめ、春が始まります。この日から八十八日目はお茶摘みの季節とされています。（この時点ではすでに初夏になります。）

この時期に日本に滞在していたら、節分の行事を楽しんでみるのも良いと思います。

余談ですが、「鬼」をgoogleさんで翻訳すると「demon」と出てきます。僕も間違えていたのですが、ネイティブの先生に「ogre」の方がイメージ的に近いよ、と言われ修正しました。画像検索で調べてみるとわかりやすいですが、「demon」はバッサバッサとするような翼が付いた紅い悪魔みたいなもので、「ogre」は緑色の巨人、もしくはシュレックみたいなイメージです。

更に余談ですが、二月というのは寒さが厳しく、体力が落ち、病気などにかかりやすく、悪い場合は亡くなってしまうという事が、昔から多かったのではないでしょうか？昔はそれらの原因を、邪気や鬼と推測したのかもしれません。
