How Kevin landed his ‘magical’ role as a web developer at Magical Trip in Japan

In order for you to know more about us, we will deliver the contents of interviews with employees who work at our company, what kind of background they have and what motivates them to work. This time, we would like to introduce an interview with Kevin, an engineer at our group company Magical Trip.

Originally from the Netherlands, Kevin began his IT career as an intern at Malawi while pursuing his studies at a university. Kevin is now living the dream with his wife and daughter where he combined his love for IT and travel in Japan.

-Tell me about your career journey so far…?
During my time studying IT at Holland University, I came across an exciting internship opportunity that offered both work experience and the chance to travel overseas. Eager to go on the adventure, I went on a three-month internship in Malawi with a friend. Our primary responsibilities revolved around assisting in a computer classroom and providing technical support by fixing computers.
I had a second opportunity to work as an intern again later while I was still at university. At that time, I joined a website development company where I was responsible for coding and programming so that we can create websites for our clients. They hired me while I was finishing my studies, but I ended up working there for a total of six years. During that time, one of the clients we were developing a website for was called Tiqets and they specialized in selling tickets online. This company later became very successful, and the company went through changes and eventually got merged with Tiqets. My role at Tiqets was mainly to develop a payment processing system and localize the websites into different languages.
-So, how did you end up at Magical Trip in Japan?
After some years of working, I had some accumulated annual leave which I needed to take. Having grown up with a fascination for Japanese culture because of my exposure to video games and anime, I decided to visit Japan for a month. I visited Japan for the first time beforehand already for a shorter period of time while I was still at university, but this trip made me want to live in Japan. I met a few Dutch people who were working in Japan, and I was envious, and they inspired me to immerse myself more fully into the culture. After my return, I started looking for work and that’s when I found the job advertisement for Magical Trip on the Internet.
I got a quick reply as soon as I submitted my application, and I was interviewed online. After I passed some programming tests, I was on a flight to work for Magical Trip! I resigned from Tiqets then but I wanted to take the risk. I was only able to work as an intern for the first few months on a visitor’s visa. However, thankfully, they officially hired me straight away, and after they sorted out my work visa, I came back to Japan this time as an official full-time employee. I have now been working here for 6 years.
-What do you love about Magical Trip?
I love that you can have input into the planning even as a developer. The company structure is open, flat and flexible. Magic Trip also has a unique approach to tourism that is different to the traditional way of traveling and their commitment to providing unforgettable and enjoyable experiences to travelers resonates with my values.
Contrary to the stereotypes that people often have about the rigid and stressful Japanese working culture, I find that Magical Trip offers a very flexible, inclusive and vibrant working environment. This is apparent even in our developer team which has two Dutch developers (including myself), one American, and one Japanese member, and English is our common language.
The company's international culture allows for a free exchange of creative ideas and perspectives, creating an atmosphere conducive to growth and collaboration. Remote working is now the norm and as long as we adhere to our ‘core working hours’ which are between 11 am to 4 pm, it’s very flexible. It also allows me to do the drop-off or pick-up of my daughter too.
-What has been your key highlight so far?
I would say that one of the best highlights has been simply being part of and seeing the growth of the company. At Magical Trip, we take pride in our success so far and the rewarding experiences we offer. When I first joined, there wasn’t a clear vision, to be honest. I remember simply struggling to get any bookings, but when we found the ‘hot spot’ with bar hopping, and how that evolved into other tour activities like sumo watching or exploring Akihabara, and started attracting people and getting bookings, it was really rewarding.
It's also gratifying to be able to share the wonderful experiences of Japan and seeing people having a great time. You can also receive direct feedback on something you took part in creating which is great as a developer.
-What are some work perks at Magical Trip?
We get to join the tours ourselves. When my mum and brother visited Japan recently, I got to take them on all these tours at discounted prices.
Before COVID, we used to have work drinks every week which I really enjoyed, and I’m hoping that will come back soon.
We also have what we call the ‘guide party’ every half a year where we get together with many of our tour guides that are around the country. This is also a great way to get to know local Japanese people as well. These guides are often internationally-minded people who share common interests in travel, so it’s fun to meet and get to know them.
-What are the future prospectives of Magical Trip?
We are excited to see the increase in demand for the service we offer. Magical Trip seeks to expand on a larger scale and venture internationally. It would be great to extend unique local tour services outside Japan.
-To what type of people would you call out to come and work for Magical Trip?
I think this is a great company for IT experts with automation skills who possess a love for problem-solving combined with a creative flare. Working with us not only provides an opportunity to explore different cultures but also allows you to connect with great people including local Japanese people while enjoying a fun and dynamic work environment. Japan is also a great place to live. It’s safe, relaxing, clean and comfortable. There is so much to do and see. Japanese people are kind and respectful. I have lived here for six years, and I’m not sick of it yet!

オランダ、マラウイでITキャリアを積み、そして以前から憧れを抱いていた日本へ
オランダ出身のKevinは、大学在学中にマラウイでインターンとしてITキャリアをスタートさせました。ITと旅行が大好きなKevinは現在、妻と娘と日本で幸せな生活を送っています。

-これまでのキャリアについて教えてください。
オランダ大学でITの勉強をしていた時、ITの実務経験と海外旅行の両方を短期間だけ経験できる機会があったんです。興味と冒険心をくすぐられた僕は、友人とマラウイで3ヶ月のインターンシップを経験しました。僕たちの主な仕事は、PC教室での補助とPCの修理の際の技術サポートでした。
その翌年後くらいの大学在学中に再びインターンとして働く機会があり、
母国にあったウェブサイト制作会社でクライアントのウェブサイトを制作するためのコーディングとプログラミングを担当する業務につきました。 結局その会社に在学中に採用され、6年ほどその会社で勤めました。
ウェブサイトの開発を担当していたクライアントのひとつに、オンラインでチケットを販売することを専門にしているTiqetsという会社がありました。 この会社は後に大成功を収め、僕の勤め先も、最終的にTiqetsと合併しました。 合併後の約2年間、Tiqetsでの役割は主に有料サイトの開発でした。
-どのような経緯でMagical Tripに？
合併後の約2年程働いた後、年休を消化する必要があったため、ゲームやアニメに親しんで日本文化に小さい頃から憧れを抱いていたこともあり、1カ月間日本を訪れることにしました。 日本には大学在学中に短期間訪れたことがあったのですが、この2回目の旅行では日本に住みたいという思いが強まりました。 2回目の旅では日本で仕事をしている何人かのオランダ人に会い、彼らのライフスタイルに感化されて、日本文化にもっと浸かりたいと思うようになりました。 帰国直後に日本での仕事を探し始めたところ、Magical Tripの求人広告を見つけました。応募するとすぐに返事が来て、オンラインで面接を受けました。 そしていくつかのプログラミング・テストに合格した後、Magical Tripで働けることになったんです！ 僕はその後Tiqetsを辞めて日本へ旅立ちました。 最初の数ヶ月間は、観光ビザでインターンとして働かざるを得なかったのですがありがたいことに、すぐに正式に雇用していただき、就労ビザの手続きをした後、今度は正式な正社員として日本に帰ってきました。今はMagical Tripで働き始めて6年になります。
-Magical Tripの魅力は何でしょう？
開発者であっても、開発以外のこと、例えば企画にも意見を出せるところが気に入っています。 会社組織はオープンでフラット、そしてフレキシブルです。また、Magical Tripは従来の典型的なツアーとは違うユニークな内容を提供しています。日本に来た旅行者に忘れられない楽しい体験を提供したいという思想は、僕の価値観ととても共通しています。厳しくてストレスの多いとされる日本の労働環境に対する固定観念とは逆にMagical Tripの勤務環境はとても柔軟で、異文化に対しても受容性があり、活気のある職場環境だと感じています。これは、オランダ人開発者2名（自身を含む）、アメリカ人1名、日本人1名で構成される国際色豊かな開発チームを見ても明らかです。 国際的な文化は、クリエイティブなアイデアや視点を交換し合える原動力にもなるし、異文化の者がコラボレーションできることによって会社の成長も助けていると思っています。 リモートワークは今や当たり前で、午前11時から午後4時までの「コア労働時間」さえ守れば、とてもフレキシブルです。 娘の送り迎えもできますしね。
-これまででやりがいを感じられた時はどんな時ですか？
やりがいのひとつは、純粋に会社の一員となって、現在に至るまでの成長を一緒に歩めてこれたことですね。 Magical Tripでは、お客様に価値のある体験を提供していることによって収めてきた成功に誇りを持っています。入社した当初は、正直なところ明確なビジョンなどはほとんどありませんでした。 しかし、バーホッピングツアーという「穴場」を見つけ、それが相撲観戦や秋葉原散策といった他のツアーやアクティビティに発展し、予約が入るようになったときは、本当にやりがいを感じました。 また、大好きな日本の素晴らしい体験を共有できて、旅行者たちが楽しい時間を過ごしているのを見ることができるのは嬉しいことです。 自分が制作に関わったものに対して直接フィードバックを受け取ることができるのも、開発者として良いことだと思っています。
-Magical Tripで働くメリットは何ですか？
自分たちもツアーに参加できることです。先日自分の母と弟が来日した時は色んなところに社割で連れて行くことができました。
コロナの前は、毎週職場の飲み会があり、とても楽しかったので、近いうちに復活することを期待しています。 他には半年に一度、「ガイド・パーティー」といって、全国にいる多くのツアー・ガイドと集まる機会もあります。 これもまた、地元の日本人と知り合える良い機会です。 ガイドさんたちは、旅行という共通の趣味を持つ国際感覚豊かな人が多いので、会って交流を深められるのは楽しいですよ。
-Magical Tripの今後は？
我々が提供するサービスへの需要が高まっていることに期待も膨らんでいます。今後、より大きな規模に拡大し、国際的な事業展開を目指していきたいです。 ユニークな現地ツアーサービスを海外にも広げていけたらいいですね。
-Magical Tripにはどのような人材が適していると思われますか？
問題解決をすることに対して前向きで、クリエイティブで、IT分野においてはオートメーションスキルを持つ人にとっては最高の会社だと思います。僕たちと一緒に働くことで、異文化を経験する機会が得られるだけでなく、楽しく画期的な職場環境で現地の日本人を含む素敵な人々とつながることができます。
また、日本という国はとにかく住むにも素晴らしい場所です。 安全でリラックスできて、清潔で快適です。 様々な体験や観光する場所もたくさんあります。また日本人は親切で礼儀正しい方たちばかりです。もう住んで6年間になりますが、まだまだ飽きません！
