#3 乱れ飛び交う省略語たち

ドウモ、イトウです。普段から目にしている英語で書かれたメールやドキュメントなどから、わたしが出会ったいろいろな英語表現について調べたことを備忘録として残していくシリーズ、第３弾です。

今回記録したいのは、こちら。

Abbreviation とAcronym

どちらも「略語」という意味のある単語ですが、ちょっと違いがあります。
Your Dictionaryによくまとめられたページがあったので、少し見てみます。

Abbreviations are shortened forms of words or lengthy phrases. You'll find them in almost every discipline and area of life, from commonly used abbreviations in names or titles, such as Mr. for Mister or Pres. for President, to less commonly used abbreviations, such as the short version of the word abbreviation itself, which is abbr.

Abbreviations are shortened form--> Abbreviationは短縮された形
何の？：of words or lengthly phrases. --> 単語や長い言い回し 
You'll find them --> 見つけることができる
どこで？：in almost every discipline and area of life
--> 専門分野や日常生活の中までほとんどで
さらに修飾：from commonly used abbreviation in names or titles
--> 名前やタイトルに使われる共通した省略語から
to less commonly used abbreviations
--> 言葉そのものを省略するものがある

*from A to B ：AからBまで
の構造が見えますね。いろんな省略語があることを示すために使われているようです。それぞれ例が出ていますね。

i) 名前やタイトルの例：such as Mr. for Mister or Pres. for President
Mister --> Mr.
President --> Pres.

ii) 言葉のそのものを省略：such as the short version of the word abbreviation itself, which is abbr.
abbreviation --> abbr.

一方で、Acronymは

There is more than one type of abbreviation. An acronym is a new word created from the initial letters of a long name or phrase, for example, NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). An initialism is where a long phrase is abbreviated to its initial letters but the letters are pronounced individually, not spoken as a word - for example, FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation). An initialism can be considered a type of acronym.

An acronym is a new word --> Acronymは新しい単語
created from the initial letters of a long name or phrase,
--> 長い名前やフレーズの頭文字から作られる

*読み方の違いがあるとして２種類の例が出てきます。

i) for example, NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization)
--> 一つ目の例は、NATO(北大西洋条約機構：ナトーと読みますよね)

ii) An initialism is where a long phrase is abbreviated to its initial letters but the letters are pronounced individually, not spoken as a word
--> 2つ目の例は、同じように省略して頭文字だけで表現するが、独立して発音されるもの、単語として呼ばれないものになります。
for example, FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation)
--> FBI(連邦捜査局：エフ・ビー・アイと読みますよね)

コミュニケーションをスピードアップ

如何だったでしょうか。AbbreviationとAcronymはどちらも「省略語」という意味ですが、何となく違いがわかりましたね。この単語自体を目にする機会は少ないですが、省略語はこれでもかというほど飛び交っています。
メールやプレゼンテーション資料に限らず会話の中でもガンガン使われます。単語全てをきっちり書いたり言ったりすると時間がかかりますからね。よく使われるもの、とくに業界特有の言葉はちゃんと覚えてコミュニケーションのスピードアップに繋げていきたいですね。
