今日の英語は、Supposed to

Supposed to

「〜のはず/〜するはず/本来〜をするもの」
最後の”d”を発音せずに言う。

規則による「本当は〜をするはず」
車に乗っているときはシートベルトを着用しなければいけないが、シートベルトをしていない友達に

You are supposed to wear your seat belt.
（本当はシートベルトをしなくてはならない）

期待による「〜をするはず」
友達と夕方に会う予定がある場合

I’m supposed to meet him in the afternoon.

I was supposed to meet him in the afternoon.

Be supposed to　を過去形で使う場合。
予想してたけど起こらない
「〜をするはずだったのにしなかった」

過去形では　was/were supposed to　の後に　but _____　となること多し。

It’s supposed to rain tomorrow.（明日は雨が降るらしいです）
I thought cats were supposed to be independent.（猫は独立心が強いと思っていたが、、、）
I was supposed to go Christmas shopping yesterday but I watched a movie instead.（昨日クリスマス・ショッピングにいくはずだったのですが、代わりに映画を見ました）

一般的に知られている情報に基づいての「〜らしい」
習慣や性質により「本来〜するものである」

Conversation is supposed to be fun.
This book is supposed to be life-changing.
Christmas is supposed to be spent with family.
Learning a new language is supposed to be challenging.

のように、このBe supposed toは英会話に頻出なのです。
なので、覚えておきましょう。
