Brief Synopsis:
Chihiro, an 11-year-old girl finds a palm-sized ancient female statue in a rice paddy. The statue transforms into a woman and begins to dance, expressing the way of life of ancient women. Chihiro finds a signpost for life in this figure.

Director's statement:
“JOMON” was produced as one of the short films in a feature-length omnibus film on the theme of women's lives.
Jomon" is the name of a certain period category in Japanese history. It is beginning to be said that the way prehistoric women were depicted in paintings and papers in archaeology until the early 20th century may have been too much influenced by patriarchal ideas from the Middle Ages onward....
Bones that were thought to be male human remains found in dangerous hunting grounds were in fact female, bones of powerful men who were carefully buried were actually found to be female, and so on....
Recent scientific advances show that we may have limited the roles of men and women in human history too much. And it is time for us to rethink the gender and roles of men and women in contemporary Japanese society. Rather, I believe that there is no other way for the human species to survive than to continue the journey of finding a middle ground, where men and women overlap and exist as one life, without any distinction between the sexes.　Prehistoric women would have lived with as many possibilities as are presented to women today. The dance of the "Jomon Goddess" in the film represents the possibilities of all girls living today.

あらすじ
11歳の少女ちひろは、田んぼで手のひらサイズの古代の女性像を見つける。その像は女性に変身して踊り始め、古代の女性の生き様を表現していた。その姿に、ちひろは人生の道標を見出す。

監督より
　「JOMON」は、女性の生き方をテーマにした長編オムニバス映画の短編の一つとして制作されました。「縄文」とは日本史のある時代区分の名前です。
　20世紀初頭までの考古学において、絵画や論文で示されてきた先史時代の女性の描かれ方が、中世以降の家父長制の考え方の影響を受けすぎていたのではないか…と言われ始めています。
危険な狩場で発見された男性の人骨と思われていた骨が、実際は女性のものだったり、丁寧に埋葬された権力者の人骨が、実は女性の骨だと判明したり…。最近の科学の進歩は、私たちが人類史を語る上での男女の役割を限定しすぎていたのではないかと示しています。

　そして、現代の日本社会においても、私たちは、男性、女性の性差と役割について考え直すべき時期がきています。男性も女性も、今までの人類史において、同じように前を向いて歩んできつつも、男女それぞれの軌跡は大きく遠く離れているのではないでしょうか。
　今はもう、性別という括りもなしに、男性と女性とは、手を取り合い、その命を重ね合い、ひとつの「いのち」として存在すべき時代がやってきたのだと感じます。
　人類という種がこの後も存続していくためには、男女の新しい中庸を見出していくこの旅を続けていく以外の方法はありません。

　先史時代の女性たちは、現代の女性たちに示されている可能性の数と同じように、多くの可能性を持って生きていたことでしょう。映画に登場する「縄文の女神」の踊りは、今を生きるすべての女の子の可能性を表現しています。

Director: Fumie Nishikawa
Born in Tokyo, Japan. She graduated from London college of printing, University of the Arts London in 2002, and her graduation film "While you sleep," which she wrote and shot, screened at the 59th Venice International Film Festival.
She released her first feature-length film “Azemichi road”in 2009. The film won the 2nd Prize in the Live Action Feature Film category at the Chicago International Children's Film Festival. The film also selected and awarded at more than a dozen film festivals in various countries, including North America, Japan, Canada, Korea, and Indonesia.

脚本/撮影を務めた卒業制作作品「While you sleep」が第59回ベネチア国際映画祭で上映。
2011年、監督作である長編劇場映画「あぜみちジャンピンッ！」を国内公開。シカゴ国際児童映画祭を含む海外/国内映画祭にて上映/受賞多数。
2023年、短編映画「The Left Hand Dreams」を監督。映画祭応募、公開予定。

Music: Kyo Icihnose
Born in Tokyo. Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts with a B.A. in Music Composition and M.A. in Music Research from the same university.
Starting with his first solo album "The Machineries of Joy" (2002), he has produced and released a total of four solo albums.
His 2nd Album "Lontano" was selected as one of the best albums of the year by the UK music magazine "WIRE".
He has also composed numerous film scores. "Whale, Imagination" in which he participated in composition and piano, won the Bronze Prize at the 2002 Cannes International CM Festival.

音楽：一ノ瀬 響
東京藝術大学音楽学部作曲科卒業、同大学大学院音楽研究科修士課程修了。作曲を林光氏らに師事。

2002年初のソロアルバム「よろこびの機械」を皮切りに合計4枚のソロアルバムを制作、リリースしている。2nd Album「Lontano」はUKの音楽雑誌”WIRE”の特集にて年間ベストアルバムの1枚に選ばれた。映像音楽も多数。作曲とピアノで参加した「鯨・イマジネーション」は2002年のカンヌ国際ＣＭフェスティバルブロンズ賞受賞。

出演：鈴木美奈子（女神）
日本大学芸術学部卒。幼少よりモダンダンスを始め、中村隆彦らに師事。現在はフリーのダンサー・振付家として舞台、映画などで活動。これまでにインバル・ピント、小野寺修二、白井剛、森下真樹、康本雅子の作品等に出演。現代美術家・束芋演出『映像芝居「錆から出た実」』では主演を務め、「演劇最強論・ing」最優秀ダンサー賞を受賞。

ナレーション：ブレイク・クロフォード
テキサス出身。幼少の頃より京都の伝統文化の中で育ち、歌舞伎に興味を持つ。外国人歌舞伎グループ「ジャパネスク歌舞伎」のメンバーとして、高校時代より多数舞台に出演。現在は、バイリンガルとして日英の通訳・翻訳のほかに、俳優としてのＴＶＣＦ等出演、映画の助監督としての一面も持ち、制作に関わった映画に「プライド」「ヒットマン」等がある。直近の出演作はNHK土曜ドラマ「空白を満たしなさい」。
