Gion Festival begins:July 1st(Saturday)

The Gion Festival in Kyoto has begun today. The festival will continue until July 31st.

On the first day, a ritual called Naginata Hokomachi Osendo takes place at Yasaka Shrine, and the second-floor musicians perform in each Yamahoko-machi (consisting of floats and portable shrines) until the 11th. Tomorrow, on the 2nd, the "lot-drawing ceremony" will be held at Kyoto City Hall. The order of the Yamahoko processions for the pre-festival (Sakimatsuri, on July 17th) and post-festival (Atomatsuri, on July 24th) will be determined by drawing lots, except for the 9 out of the 34 floats that are not subject to the drawing. The pre-festival will be conducted with 23 floats, and the post-festival with 11 floats.

The Naginata Hoko is the first float in the pre-festival, the 23rd is the Funahoko (boat-shaped float), and the 24th, which leads the post-festival, is the Hashibenkei-yama, while the 33rd and last is the Oofunahoko (large boat-shaped float). The order of these floats is determined without drawing lots.

The Mikoshi-togyo (portable shrine procession) takes place as the Shinkosai (Procession of the Divine Palanquins) from Yasaka Shrine to Shijo Go-Ryosho on the 17th and as the Kanko-sai (Return Procession) from Shijo Go-Ryosho to Yasaka Shrine on the 24th.

From the Pre-Festival Yoiyama on the 14th to the 16th and the Post-Festival Yoiyama from the 21st to the 23rd, Kyoto enters a month of excitement during the Gion Festival.
