最高速度285km/hからの減速：2024年8月14日（水）

昨日13日（火）にお盆休みで，京都駅から新横浜駅まで新幹線を利用して移動した。JR東海のEX予約専用ICカードを利用したチケットレスでの乗車だ。今年もお盆の期間（8月9日から8月18日まで）の「のぞみ」は全席指定席の運行となっている。今回は予約が間に合わず，「ひかり」自由席での乗車となった。「ひかり」の1号車から5号車までが自由席の車両となっていたが，京都駅で奇跡的にも二人席の窓側に座ることができた。

　8月8日に気象庁が南海トラフ地震臨時情報（巨大地震注意）を発表したため，8月8日から1週間程度，東海道新幹線は三島駅から三河安城駅まで速度を落として運転している。ただ，その区間のイメージしていた徐行とは少し違った。今の新幹線は最高速度が285km/hであり，今回の措置は，三島駅から三河安城駅までの最高速度を230km/hに落として運転するというものだ。

　同区間で230km/hに最高速度を落とすことにより，到着時刻が約10分から5分程度，通常よりも遅延することになるわけであるが，意外にも，減速時の新幹線は十分に大きな速度であるのに，新幹線が走行中の窓から見える景色は，それ以上に遅く感じるのは不思議だ。速度285km/hがいかに速いのか，こんなところで実感できるとは思ってもみなかった。

Yesterday, the 13th (Tuesday), during the Obon holiday, I traveled from Kyoto Station to Shin-Yokohama Station using the Shinkansen. I used the JR Central EX Reservation exclusive IC card for a ticketless ride. This year as well, all seats on the 'Nozomi' trains during the Obon period (from August 9 to August 18) are reserved seats. However, I was unable to make a reservation in time, so I took a non-reserved seat on the 'Hikari.' Cars 1 to 5 of the 'Hikari' were designated as non-reserved, and miraculously, I was able to get a window seat in a two-person row at Kyoto Station.

Due to the Japan Meteorological Agency's announcement on August 8 of the Nankai Trough Earthquake Temporary Information (Giant Earthquake Warning), the Tokaido Shinkansen has been operating at reduced speeds between Mishima Station and Mikawa Anjo Station for about a week starting August 8. However, the slow speed in this section was a bit different from what I had imagined. The current Shinkansen has a top speed of 285 km/h, and the measure this time was to reduce the maximum speed to 230 km/h between Mishima Station and Mikawa Anjo Station.

By reducing the maximum speed to 230 km/h in this section, the arrival time is delayed by about 10 to 5 minutes compared to usual. Interestingly, even though the Shinkansen was still traveling at a sufficiently high speed during the slowdown, the scenery outside the window seemed to move slower than I expected. I never thought I would realize just how fast 285 km/h really is in such a situation.
