Chapter 2 

M r. Bennet was among the earliest of those who waited on Mr. Bingley. He had always intended to visit him, though to the last always assuring his wife that he should not go; and till the evening after the visit was paid she had no knowledge of it. It was then disclosed in the following manner. Observing his second daughter employed in trimming a hat, he suddenly addressed her with: “I hope Mr. Bingley will like it, Lizzy.” “We are not in a way to know what Mr. Bingley likes,” said her mother resentfully, “since we are not to visit.”

２ 　ミスタ・ベネットは、はやばやとミスタ・ビングリーを訪ねた連中のひとりだった。もともと訪ねる気はあったけれども、奥方には最後までわたしは行かんぞと言い張っていたのである。だからミスタ・ビングリーを訪問したその日の夕方まで、奥方はそのことをまったくご存じなかった。その事実は次のような形で明かされた。次女のエリザベスが帽子にせっせと飾りをつけているのを見て、ミスタ・ベネットはだしぬけにこう言ったのである。 「ビングリー氏がその帽子を気に入ってくれるといいがねえ、リジー」 「先方のお好みなんて、知りようがないじゃありませんか」リジーの母親は腹立たしげに言った。「どうせお訪ねすることもないんですから」
