・二つの型がピッチ曲線で見ると、どちらも「こぶ」の形をしていること、
・またimpressed,challenging ,protesting などの意味で類似点があることに注目。

内容

具体的な例をO&A（1973）からそれぞれ引っ張って来て比較。
二つの共通する意味（core）について、
「To determine what exactly this core is is beyond the scope of this paper」
としながらも、
「it may, however, tentatively be described as “surprised, emotionally involved but pretending to be detached from the situation.’’」　
としている。
また、protesting,unpleasantの意味ではない例をしめしながら、これらの意味について
「the protesting effect is more due to text than to the intonation .」としている。
その後、The Long jumpのrising head とtheJackknifeのnucleusのrise部分がどちらも義務的なことに着目し、どっちかがどっちかの変異形と見ると良いとした。
さらに、頭部が無いのは許されるが、核音節がないのは許されないことから、2つで共通する心的態度を話者が表現する時、後者をbasicとして、頭部が設定できるときに変異形として前者を取れるとしている。
さらに今後の課題として、High drop ,Low dropをどちらかの派生形とみれる可能性、Low BounceとHigh Diveがtheoretically mutually ‘collapsible.’となる可能性を述べた。
