見た人を映し出す自画像｜Areej Obaid（アリージ・オバイド）

アリージ・オバイドは、ジェッダ出身のアーティストで、キング・アブドゥルアジーズ大学で心理学を学び、自身の気持ちを表現するような絵画制作を行なっています。彼女は、女性という存在を自身の感情ー愛、安心感、恐怖などーと結びつけて考え、自らの内面を映し出すような自画像を描いています。
幼少期から絵を描き始めた彼女は、大学卒業後に油彩での絵画表現に目を向け、アーティストとしての自己表現を突き詰めていきました。2019年に自身の作品をSNSで公開したところ、アーティストのモハメド・シャラヒリ教授に受け入れられ、モハメド・アル・アブラン教授がZawaya Galleryで開催する展示会に参加する機会を得ることになりました。その後は、地元で開催された５つのグループ展に参加し、アーティストとしての活動を積極的に続けています。

オバイド作品に登場する女性の多くは、目を瞑っているか目が落ち窪んでおり、そのいくつかは極端に首を傾げています。また、背景も明るく華やかなものもあれば薄暗く澱んだものもあり、精神における二面性を感じさせます。ある人は、そこに人生の困難に直面した女性の不屈の精神の確固たる姿を想起し、ある人はその多義性と秘密を読み取り、自分の気持ちを通じてその作品に対するイメージを受け取っています。このように、彼女は作品の捉え方をオープンにしており、鑑賞者によって思い描くイメージは様々です。そして、無題というタイトルにもその意図が表れています。このような作品制作について、”私はもともと無口な人間で、一般的に自分の感情を表現することはあまりありません。だからこそ、色や形の歪みで感情を表現する表現派に転向したのです。”と語っています。さらに、閉じた目の秘密についても、"この絵は、終わりのないものを長い間待っている状態の女性を表現した 。“と述べています。

上記の2点の作品を見てみると、私は1枚目の作品からは、人生は色とりどりで私を遥か別の世界へ誘ってくれているかのように感じ、2枚目の方は、彼女の人生はプレッシャーに晒されており、人生の光が見えていない光景を表しているように感じました。

イスラム心理学に着目してみると、個人の充実を目指すために、男性には６つ、女性には５つの本質的な資質があるとされています。そのうちの女性の３つ目の資質に”喜ぶこと”とあり、”人生に偶然はない。神は物事を完璧に行い、神が彼女のために計画したことを忘れることはない。彼女の喜びや自分自身への自信を損なうものは何もない。”と述べられています。また、家庭における女性の地位として、コーランにこのように書かれています。
« […] فَالصَّالِحَاتُ قَانِتَاتٌ حَافِظَاتٌ لِّلْغَيْبِ بِمَا حَفِظَ اللَّهُ »
« [...] だから徳のある女性は従順であり、神が保存したいものを秘密裏に保存します。 […] ».
コーラン・スーラ4章34節
"Salihatu”（サリハトゥ）は”徳のある"と訳され、優れた女性を表し人を輝かせ、その心は善良さで溢れ、その善良さは仕事、家、子供、夫、家族などすべてのものに影響を与えます。
"Qanitatoun”（カニタトゥン）は”従順"と訳され、まっすぐで正直で、細かいところにまで気を配る几帳面な女性を表しています。
"Hafidatoun”（ハフィダトゥン）は”守護者"、"秘密を守る人"と訳され、責任ある女性の最低限の、そして完全に有効な状態を表しています。つまり、女性が家の中で何が起こっているのかを秘密にしていることです。
そういう意味では、家庭を持つ女性にとって、彼女の作品は堅実で家庭的な女性の象徴として写るのかもしれません。彼女の作品はまるで鏡のようです。

A self-portrait reflecting the viewer | Areej Obaid
Areej Obaid is an artist from Jeddah who studied psychology at King Abdulaziz University and creates paintings that express her feelings. She considers the female existence concerning her own emotions - love, reassurance, and fear - and her paintings are self-portraits that reflect her inner self.
She started drawing at a very young age, and after graduating from college, she turned her attention to painting in oil to explore her self-expression as an artist. In 2019, when she published her works on social media, she was accepted by the artist Professor Mohamed Sharahili. As a result, she participated in an exhibition that Professor Mohamed Al-Ablan will hold at Zawaya Gallery. Since then, she has participated in five group exhibitions held locally and actively pursues her career as an artist.
Many of the women in Obaid's works are meditating or have sunken eyes, and some of them have highly tilted heads. Some of the backgrounds are bright and gorgeous, while others are dim and stagnant, showing the duality of the spirit. Some people see the solidity of a woman's indomitable spirit in the face of difficulties in life. In contrast, others read their ambiguity and secrecy and receive the images of the works through their feelings. In this way, she is open about how she perceives her work so that each viewer feels differently. And the title "Untitled" reflects this intention. About this kind of work, she says, "I am a silent person by nature, I do not tend to express my feelings in general, which is the reason why I turned to the expressive school, which expresses feelings with colours and distortion of shapes." She also states the secret of the closed eyes, "the painting expresses a woman in a state of long waiting, to what has no end."
Looking at the two pieces above, I felt from the first one as if life was colourful and inviting me to a far different world, while the second one represented a scene where her life was under pressure, and she could not see the light of life.
According to Islamic psychology, there are six essential qualities for men and five essential qualities for women to achieve personal fulfilment. The third of these qualities for women is "rejoicing," saying, "There are no coincidences in life. God does things perfectly, and she never forgets what he has planned for her. Therefore, nothing can diminish her joy or her confidence in herself." Also, as for the status of women in the home, the Quran says this.
« […] فَالصَّالِحَاتُ قَانِتَاتٌ حَافِظَاتٌ لِّلْغَيْبِ بِمَا حَفِظَ اللَّهُ »
« [...] So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard. [...] »
Quran Sura 4:34.
"Salihatu", which translates as "virtuous", describes a woman who is excellent and radiates goodness, and whose heart is full of goodness which in turn influences her work, her home, her children, her husband, her family, and everything else.
"Qanitatoun, which translates to "obedient," describes a woman who is straightforward, honest, and meticulous in her attention to detail.
"Hafidatoun", which translates as "guardian" or "secret keeper", represents the minimum and fully effective status of a responsible woman. It means that the woman keeps what is going on in the house a secret.
In that sense, for women with families, her work may be seen as a symbol of a solid, home-loving woman. Her work is like a mirror.
