TOPAZ

A penguin lived in the southern end of the earth.
His name was “Topaz”.
He had a treasure, it was a clear blue stone.
His grandmother presented it to him.
She said, “This stone will bring you a good friend”.

One day he met a human group.
They asked him, “Do you want to go to a country far away from here?”.
He didn’t know where the country was, but he got on a big ship with his treasure.
The ship slowly sailed out to sea.

After he slept over a hundred nights, the ship arrived at a port town in the calm of evening.
He got on a train and went to Tokyo because on the ship he heard someone said, “I saw a big Christmas tree in Tokyo. It touched the sky!”.
When he arrived to Tokyo, the sky became dark.

He asked a girl, “Where is the big Christmas tree?”.
She said “OK, Let’s go to see the Christmas tree !”.
Her name was “Sunflower”.

After they turned the third corner, he found the big Christmas tree!!
It was shining red brightly.
He couldn’t see the top, so he believed it was over the sky.

Then his treasure rolled on to the road.
“What a beautiful stone!” she said.
He said “This is my treasure, it will bring me a good friend”.
She took out a little box, and she said “I have my treasure, too”.
She opened the box, there were a lot of colorful candies.
She chose a yellow one, and she gave him it.
The candy’s wrapping paper was printed of sunflowers.

He said thanks and goodbye to her.
He got a train for the port.
He heard a whistle when he arrived there.
It seemed like a song that his friend birds sang.
Suddenly he missed his home.
He found a ship that was going to the southern end of the earth, he got on the ship again.

He thought “I will present this candy to my grandmother!”.
And he fell asleep.

地球の南の果てに、ペンギンの男の子が住んでいました。
彼の名前はトパーズ。
彼はおばあさんからもらった透き通る青い宝石を持っていました。
おばあさんは「この宝石は、いつかあなたに大切な友達を連れてきてくれるはずよ」と教えてくれました。

ある日、彼は人間たちに会いました。
人間たちは「どこか遠くに国に行きたくないかい？」とトパーズにたずねました。
そんな国がどこにあるのか全然知らなかったけど、彼は青い宝石を持って大きな船に乗りました。
船はゆっくりと海に出港していきました。

出港してから100日以上過ぎたある静かな夕方、大きな船はある港町に到着しました。
トパーズは船を下り、電車に乗って東京に向かいました。
なぜなら、ある船員が「東京には空まで届く大きなクリスマスツリーがあるんだ！」と言っているのを船の上で聞いたからです。
彼が東京についたとき、空はもう暗くなっていました。

トパーズは近くにいた女の子に「大きなクリスマスツリーはどこにあるの？」とたずねました。
その女の子は「いいわ、一緒に見に行きましょう！」と答えました。
彼女の名前はヒマワリといいました。

トパーズとヒマワリが3つ目の角を曲がった時、そこには大きな大きなクリスマスツリーが見えました。
そのクリスマスツリーはピカピカと赤く輝いていました。
高すぎててっぺんが見えなかったので、「やっぱり空まで届いてるんだ」と彼は思いました。

その時、大切な青い宝石が転がり落ちました。
「なんてきれいな石！」と言って、ヒマワリが宝石を拾ってくれました。
「これは僕の宝物なんだ。僕に友達を連れてきてくれるんだって。」とトパーズは答えました。
彼女も「私も宝物を持っているのよ」と小さな箱を取りだしました。
その箱の中には色とりどりのキャンディが沢山入っていました。
ヒマワリはその中から黄色いキャンディを取り出し、彼に渡しました。
そのキャンディーの包み紙にはヒマワリの絵が描かれていました。

トパーズはヒマワリに「一緒に来てくれてありがとう。さようなら。」と言って、彼女と別れました。
そして、港へ行く電車に乗りました。
港へ着いたとき、船の汽笛の音が聞こえました。
その音は彼の友達の鳥たちが歌う声に似ていました。
突然、トパーズは家が恋しくなってきました。
彼は地球の南の果てへと向かう船を見つけ、その船に乗りました。

「家に帰ったらこのキャンディをおばあさんにあげよう。」と考えているうちに、トパーズは眠りに落ちました。
