今日は、use, write, speakをご紹介

1. use

for the use of ~が利用するための

This is for the use of students only.
学生のみの利用となります。

It's no use ~しても無駄

It's no use pumping a dry well.
乾いた井戸を汲んでも無駄だよ。

2. write

write back 返信を書く

Macmillan wrote back saying that he could certainly help.
マクミラン社からは、「必ずお役に立てる」という返事が来た。

I'm afraid I never wrote back.
残念ながら、私は返事を書いていません。

write in to (organization) 手紙を送る

She wrote in to the BBC to complain.
彼女は、BBCに苦情を書き込んだ。

written into the contract

A penalty clause was written into the contract.

write off send letter asking for something

He wrote off to the New Zealand Government for these pamphlets about life in New Zealand.

The president persuaded the West to write off Polish debts.

write up record

I wrote up the minutes of the meeting and circulated them by email.

He wrote down every word the teacher said.

3. speak

speak to  speech

When speaking to the seminar, 

speak for  you make their views and demands known, or represent them

He said it was the job of the Church to speak for the underprivilleged.
恵まれない人々の代弁者となるのが教会の仕事だと。

I speak for all my employees of our organization.
私は組織の全従業員を代表して発言しています。

speak of something has been written by saying what the auther speaks of.

Throughout the book Tom speaks of the abuse of Party power.
この本の中で、トムは党の権力の乱用について語っています。

speak well of, speak highly of

Let every man speak well of the bridge theat carries him over. 
すべての人に、自分を運ぶ橋のことをよく語ってもらいましょう。

Speak well of your friend, of your enemy say nothing.
友人のことは良く言い、敵のことは何も言わない。

Don’t speak ill of others.
人の悪口を言わない。

on speaking terms with 話があう

Are you on speaking terms with him? 彼とは話が合うのですか？

He's on speaking terms with a number of senior politicians.
