宿木

宿木 （ヤドリギ）


大型の樹木が秋冬にその葉を落とした樹上に
球体状のものが幾つも連なった姿を見かける
事がある。写真のものがそれである。


茶所で有名な宇治の街中を、アクティビティ
サークルの仲間達と歩く中、写真の様に丸い
オブジェ状のものに取り囲まれた樹木が現れ
女性メンバーから『アレって鳥の巣なの？』
との質問が出た。『アレは鳥の巣などでなく
ヤドリギと云うパラサイトプラント、つまり
寄生植物だよ』私は答えた。


ビャクダン目、ビャクダン科、ヤドリギ属、
他の樹木に取り憑いては、その水分や養分を
吸い取ってしまう寄生植物である。ただし、
以前にここで記事紹介をした『思い草』とは
違って、ヤドリギは寄生しながらも自身でも
光合成を行う為、半寄生植物に分類される。


樹上に生えたこれは、春先に目立たない花を
咲かせると、蜜を出して積極的に虫を集めて
受粉活動を活発に行う。ここで受精した花は
じっくりと時間をかけて、冬の１１〜１２月
になってやっと結実し、餌の少ない鳥たちに
貴重なタンパク源となるのである。


この実の中の種は粘着質成分に覆われていて
鳥の腸内では分解されずにそのまま排泄され
木の枝などに付着する。ここでとても重要な
事は、落葉樹などの葉についたとて、それは
地面に落ちて寄生植物としては失敗となる。
１１〜１２月は落葉樹が葉を落とした後ゆえ
鳥の排泄物が枝に直に触れる場面を想定して
この時期に結実するのである。ここに花言葉
にある『忍耐』の由来がある。


落葉樹の枝に鳥の排泄物と共に付着したこの
種は、枝に根を突き刺して侵入し、寄生植物
として樹木に宿るのである。


日本で云うと寄生植物というと、ものすごく
悪いイメージがあるが、このヤドリギは西洋
の文化に於いては、古代の時代より神聖なる
存在であり、宗教的な価値のあるものとして
崇められている植物となる。


西洋文化の中で始まったケルト族の風習では
ヤドリギを命の始まりの植物として、男女の
どちらからでもあれ、クリスマスの季節には
このヤドリギの下でキスを求める行為は普通
のこととしてあった事。キスはセックスへの
入口であり、愛を分かち合う行為そのものは
神聖なる男女の営みという考え方からのもの。


それがこの花言葉の『キスしてください』の
由来である。


このヤドリギの下でのキスのシーンは、欧米
の映画の中には色々と登場しているもの。
キリスト教における愛や幸福を象徴する植物
こそがこのヤドリギなのである。

MISTLETOE

Under large trees in autumn and winter, it's common to see spherical objects hanging from the branches after the leaves have fallen. The photo depicts one such instance.

While walking through the famous tea-growing town of Uji with my activity circle companions, we encountered trees surrounded by round, orb-like objects, as shown in the photo. A female member asked, "Are those bird nests?" I replied, "No, those are not bird nests but rather mistletoe, a parasitic plant that attaches itself to other trees to draw moisture and nutrients."

Mistletoe, belonging to the sandalwood order, sandalwood family, and mistletoe genus, is a parasitic plant that attaches itself to other trees, absorbing their moisture and nutrients. Unlike the previously mentioned "Thought Grass," mistletoe is classified as a hemiparasitic plant because it can also photosynthesize while parasitizing.

These mistletoe plants growing on trees produce inconspicuous flowers in spring, attracting insects with nectar for pollination. The fertilized flowers then take their time to mature and finally bear fruit in November to December, providing valuable protein sources for birds during the lean winter months.

The seeds within these fruits are covered in a sticky substance and pass through birds' digestive systems without being broken down, being excreted intact onto branches or other surfaces. It's crucial that they land on deciduous tree branches, as if they land on fallen leaves, the parasitic plant's attempt fails. The timing of fruiting in November to December coincides with the period when deciduous trees have shed their leaves, allowing bird droppings to directly touch the branches. This is where the origin of the flower language "patience" comes from.

Seeds that adhere to branches along with bird droppings penetrate the branches, establishing themselves as parasitic plants within the trees.

While parasitic plants may have a negative connotation in Japan, mistletoe holds a sacred status in Western culture, revered for its religious significance since ancient times.

In Celtic traditions within Western culture, mistletoe is regarded as a sacred plant symbolizing the beginning of life. During the Christmas season, it was customary for both men and women to seek kisses under mistletoe, as it was considered a normal practice. Kisses, seen as the gateway to intimacy, were viewed as a sacred act of sharing love between individuals.

This is the origin of the flower language "Please kiss me."

Scenes of kissing under mistletoe are depicted in various Western films, symbolizing love and happiness in Christian tradition. Mistletoe embodies the essence of love and happiness in Christianity.
