光源氏
（ヒカルゲンジ）



ツツジ目、ツバキ科、ツバキ属の園芸品種。
こちらのツバキは江戸時代に関東地方で産出
された古典品種であり、世界各地からも購入
の多い椿の中の名品とされている。


海外で求められる椿（カメリア）のカタチは
花が大きく咲き、ゴージャスに見えるものが
好まれるので、日本の猪口咲や筒咲のものは
あまり好まれない傾向がある。だが、こちら
のヒカルゲンジは西洋カメリアをも凌ぐ魅力
溢れる椿となっている。


花は牡丹咲の大輪で、花色は桃色地に紅色の
縦絞りと、白覆輪が入るそのディテールとで
見事な美しさを魅せる椿となっている。


それは光源氏の物語の魅力、そして作者の
紫式部（ムラサキシキブ）の魅力を表す椿に
相応しい気品と風格に満ちた逸品と言える。


この椿は宇治川を橋を渡った、平等院表参道
の入口にもなる場所に設置された紫式部像横
に植えられた椿となる。

HIKARUGENJI

This is a horticultural variety of the genus Camellia in the family Theaceae of the order Ericales. This Camellia is a classical variety that originated in the Kanto region during the Edo period and is considered one of the finest varieties of Camellias, highly sought after from various parts of the world.

The desired shape of Camellias (also known as "Tsubaki" in Japanese) abroad tends to be large, with extravagant-looking flowers being preferred. Varieties with small, cup-shaped or tubular flowers, such as "Chokozaki" and "Tutuzaki" in Japan, are less favored. However, the "Hikarugenji" variety here surpasses even Western camellias in its captivating allure.

Its flowers are large and peony-shaped, with a peach-colored base adorned with vertical streaks of crimson and white outer rings, exhibiting exquisite beauty in its details.

It is truly a masterpiece that reflects the charm of "The Tale of Genji" and the allure of its author, Murasaki Shikibu. This Camellia embodies dignity and elegance worthy of such a literary masterpiece.

This Camellia is planted near a statue of Murasaki Shikibu, the author of "The Tale of Genji," at the entrance to the approach to the Byodo-in Temple, which spans the Uji River.
