まま、きり

“まま” expresses a state that is continuing.

雨は止んだが、道はぬかるんだままだ。
あめはやんだが、みちはぬかるんだままだ。
The rain has stopped, but the road is still muddy.

彼女は無表情のまま部屋を出ていった。
かのじょはむひょうじょうのままへやをでていった。
She left the room with an expressionless face as it was.

“きり” is an expression that indicates a state has ended and continues as such.

彼とは先月電話で話したきりで、それ以来連絡をとっていません。
かれとはせんげつでんわではなしたきりで、それいらいれんらくをとっていません。
I spoke with him on the phone last month and haven't been in touch since then.

スキーには5年前に行ったきりで、随分行っていません。
すきーには5ねんまえにいったきりで、ずいぶんいっていません。
I haven't been skiing since I went five years ago.

It is also used in the sense of “だけ(only, just),” but it gives an impression of being more emotionally emphasized than "だけ".

昨夜、彼女と初めて二人きりで夕食にでかけた。
さくや、かのじょとはじめてふたりきりでゆうしょくにでかけた。
Last night, I went out for dinner alone with her for the first time.

一度きりの人生なので、やりたいことをやりましょう。
いちどきりのじんせいなので、やりたいことをやりましょう。
Since life is only once, let's do what we want to do.
