わけ

"わけ" is used in various meanings.
It is used to refer to the circumstances or background of something.

遅刻してしまったのには訳があります。
ちこくしてしまったのにはわけがあります。
There is a reason for being late.

あれだけ日程に余裕を持って依頼をしたのだから、期日までにレポートを完成できない訳がない。
あれだけにっていによゆうをもっていらいをしたのだから、きじつまでにれぽーとをかんせいできないわけがない。
Since the request was made well ahead of the schedule, there is no reason why the report can't be completed by the deadline.

The phrase "わけあり" is sometimes used for products that are cheaper than usual because they have a slight defect or for some other reason.

この棚にあるお菓子は訳あり品なので安い。
このたなにあるおかしはわけありひんなのでやすい。
The snacks on this shelf are discounted because they are "わけあり" products.

It is also used to express understanding or acceptance upon learning the reasons for a particular fact or situation.

彼女はこんなに長い時間毎日バイオリンを練習しているのだから、上手いわけだ。
かのじょはこんなにながいじかんまいにちばいおりんをれんしゅうしているのだから、うまいわけだ。
It makes sense that she is good at the violin because she practices for such long hours every day.

彼はあれだけ甘いものが好きだから、太るわけだ。
かれはあれだけあまいものがすきだから、ふとるわけだ。
It figures he would gain weight since he likes sweets so much.

Furthermore, it is used to convey a roundabout negation of what might be assumed from the previous statement, as well as to express partial negation.

日本に長年住めば、日本語が流暢に話せるようになるわけではありません。
にほんにながねんすめば、にほんごがりゅうちょうにはなせるようになるわけではありません。
Just because you live in Japan for many years doesn't necessarily mean you will become fluent in Japanese.

私はクラシック音楽をあまり聴きませんが、嫌いなわけではありません。
わたしはくらしっくおんがくをあまりききませんが、きらいなわけではありません。
I don't listen to classical music much, but that doesn't mean I dislike it.

お酒が全く飲めないというわけではないのですが、積極的に飲むことはありません。
おさけがまったくのめないというわけではないのですが、せっきょくてきにのむことはありません。
It's not that I can't drink alcohol at all, but I don't actively choose to drink.

彼のことが嫌いなわけではないのですが、性格は合わないと感じています。
かれのことがきらいなわけではないのですが、せいかくはあわないとかんじています。
It's not that I dislike him, but I feel our personalities don't mesh well.

Also, "〜わけにはいかない" is used to mean that something must not be done. It gives a stronger impression of one's conviction not to betray what they believe is right than "〜してはならない.”

病気の子供を一人家に置いて、出かけるわけにはいきません。
びょうきのこどもをひとりいえにおいて、でかけるわけにはいきません。
I can't just leave a sick child alone at home and go out.

彼は私の親友の彼氏なので、デートに誘うわけにはいかない。
かれはわたしのしんゆうのかれしなので、でーとにさそうわけにはいかない。
Since he is my best friend's boyfriend, I cannot ask him out on a date.
