You want to write a story? Fine. Put away your dictionary, your encyclopedias, your World Almanac, and your thesaurus. Better yet, throw your thesaurus into the wastebasket.  Any word you have to hunt for in a thesaurus is the wrong word. There are no exceptions to this rule. You think you might have misspelled a word? O.K., so here is your choice: either look it up in the dictionary, thereby making sure you have it right – and breaking your train of thought and the writer’s trance in the bargain – or just spell it phonetically and correct it later. Why not?

君は強く思ってる。「書きたいんだ物語を！」って。いいだろう。まず片づけよう、君が使ってる辞書を。百科事典、世界年鑑、それから類語辞典もだ。んー、もっと良いことをしよう。投げるんだ、君の百科事典を。ゴミ箱に入るように。すべての言葉、それはそうだなー、君が見つけなくちゃいけなないと思ってる、百科事典を手にしたときね、それは間違った言葉なんだ。間違いはないぜ、この忠告は。君は思う「俺はなんかやってるだろうな、綴りの間違いを」いいだろう。これは君の選択だ。どちらか選べよ。調べるんだ辞書を使って、その結果得ることができる、何が正しいかを。そしたら、急に方向を変えるんだ君は、今まで考えていたことを。それから、文章を書く奴ってのは考えないでもいいようなことをあえて考え始める。これは、正しい答えを手に入れたおまけみたいなもんだ。もう一つの選択だ。ただ文字にする、見て、聞いて、言って、考えたことを。そしたら間違いはなかったって後から気づく。さあ、どうする？
