1966年7月Bob Dylanは創作面でもビジネス面でもピークに達していた[Highway 61-1965年]は全米 Album Cartsで3位を記録しReleased れたばかりの2枚組アルバム[Blonde on Blonde-1966年]も広く受け入れられつつあった1966年7月29日Bob DylanはWoodstock, New York,の自宅近くで自分のTriumphでMotorcycleで事故を起こし脳震盪と脊椎損傷のケガを負う。予定されていたConcertのスケジュールはすべてキャンセルされThe Hawksの仕事もなくなった。Bob Dylanは1969年のinterviewで次のように述べている(悲惨なオートバイ事故に遭って、その、しばらくおとなしくする羽目になって。でも、その事故の重大さに気づいたのは、少なくともそれから1年も経ってからだった。本格的な事故だったんだって、やっと悟ったんだ。てっきり自分は元気になれば、それまでやっていたことをすぐに再開できると思っていたのに、それができなくなってたんだよね)Woodstock Byrdcliffe ColonyにあったDylanの自宅は(High Low Ha)と呼ばれていたケガから回復しこの自宅でworld tourの模様を撮影した映画(Eat the Document)の編集作業をしていたBob Dylanを手伝うためThe Hawks(The Band＊Misic From Big Pink-68 Released)のメンバーが呼び集められる。1967年2月先に来ていたRobbie RobertsonにRick Danko、Richard Manuelが加わり遅れてGarth Hudsonもやって来た。後から来た3人はやがてWoodstockから数マイル離れたWest SaugertiesのStoll Road にある(Big Pink)と呼ばれていた家を借りて移り住む。Robbie Robertsonはその後妻となる恋人のDominiqueとすでにWoodstockに住みついていた。Levon Helmだけはまだバンドに戻らず南部を放浪していた。隠遁中1967年春、Bob Dylanと4人のThe Hawks(The Band)は(High Lo Ha)の(Red Room)と呼ばれていたLiving Roomで非公式なRecording Sessionを始める。6月頃Sessionの場所は(Big Pink)の地下室に移されたBob Dylanはinterviewでに述べている(Recordingはああじゃなきゃ。穏やかでRelaxingできる環境でね、つまり誰かの地下室とか。窓は開けて犬が床に寝っ転がっていてさ)そのRecording Session模様を収録したTapesはmusicians仲間らの手に渡り聴いた者の口コミで評判を呼ぶが正式に発表されることはなかった。1975年にReleasedされた本作[The Basement Tapes]はようやく8年の歳月を経て陽の目を見た貴重な記録だ。もちろん公式に発表しようとして録られたものではないから当然のこと音は悪い。それでも刺激的なのはRock and Roll/R&B/Gospel/CountryなどAmerican Roots的な要素を持った音楽[原点回帰]を気の置けない雰囲気の中演奏するDylanやThe Bandの姿が見れるからでありその後の彼らの行き方を示唆する重要性もさることながらその光景そのものにRomanticな魅力があるからだ。この時デビュー前のThe BandとSessionをしてそれがBootleg(海賊盤)となり世界中に出廻りそれを聞いたMusicians たちがこぞってここからの曲を取りあげたことは有名[The Basement Tapes]から直接影響を受けたか定かではないが68年以降[原点回帰]のAlbumや南部志向のアーチストが続々登場したことは事実であり[The Basement Tapes]が先駆的作品であることは疑いの余地はないBob Dylanのすべての作品の中で最も時代の変化に耐えうる物と言えるかもしれない！Tapesの音楽は歌とバックという関係を超えたDylanとThe Bandの共同作業であり自然で豊かな響きにあふれている！Traditionalな曲から新しい作品まで録音曲数は100曲以上にもおよんだ＊Billboard Top LPs & Tapes Chartで最高7位/UK Albums Chartで8位を記録/RIAAによりGold Disc に認定されている/Rolling Stone誌が選ぶBest Albums of All Time500に於いて292位
