万生集（生きる目的・理由）15 ～Manseishu／collection of meaning of life～

「人生の最大限綱領は一人の良い女、一人の良い友人、一個の良い思い出、一冊の良い書物」(G・K・チェスタトン)だと最初から思い定めておくことである。金銭も名声も地位も権力もそれなりに重要な代物なのであろうが、自分はいずれ死ぬ身だという絶対の真理を押さえておけば、そんなものはまったくもってほどほどにすますと構えるのが知識人の生き方であり死に方でなければならない。

人間は此処に生きてそこで死ぬしかない。そこでどのように生きるか死ぬかそれを具体的に各人が考えざるをえない。世界の文暗を「もののあはれ」とみている僕自信が、それをいかに「知り」そしてそれを知ることが自分の「生と死」にどうかかわってくるかを見極めることでしかないのである。ニヒリストの本領、それは字義通りに懸命に生きて、時至ればこれまた字義通り懸命に死ぬという生き方をつらぬくことでしかありえない。

男たるものは女と子供を守るために生き、そして守りきれなくなったら死ぬ、それ以外にはどんな公事における公徳(廉恥・公平・正中・勇強)に沿った生き死にも不可能なのだとわかる。女子供のために生死すると構えるとたとえば自分の神経の痛みなんかも、ほんの瑣事(さじ)にすぎないと了解するほかはない。

「生とは(死に方のことも含めて)選択の休止することなき過程のことであり、選択には、変革を選好するにせよしないにせよ、公徳の規範が必要であり、その規範は無常なる歴史の流れの河床にあって恒常を保たんとする人々の然り気なくはあるものの間断なき私徳での努力によって保守される」

We should decide from the beginning that the utmost principles of life are one good woman, one good friend, one good memory and one good book by G.K.Chesterton. Money, fame, status and power may be important stuff, however an intellectual should live and die to get set to moderate something like them at all, if we understand the absolute truth we will die sooner or later.

Human is fated to live here and die there. Each person has no choice but to think how to live and die concretely. I myself, who see the dark of the world as mononoaware（pathos）, have no choice but judge how to know it and how knowing it get involved with my life and death. The charactristics of nihilist could only stick to his way of life that live hard literally and die in time literally.

I realize that man lives to protect woman and children, dies if he can not protect and that besides them, it is impossible to live or die along any civic virtues（honor, impartial, median, brave and strong）in any public affairs. I have no choice but to understand that my neuralgia is just a little matter if I make up my mind to live or die for woman and children.

Living is the process not to pause choices. Choices require any norm of civic virtues whether you prefer change or not. The norm is on the riverbed of uncertain history flow and has been conserved by people keep constancy casually and make efforts continually by private virtues.
