浦富焼
因幡の名勝、浦富海岸の漁村田後から小栗にかけての山中より陶石を運び、乳母ヶ懐の山裾に窯を築き、出石の陶工を招いて国産奨励の政策の下、鳥取藩の助成を受けながら江戸の末期から明治維新により廃藩になるまでの十数年の間、染付の日用雑器が焼かれていました。
1971年3月、桐山城跡の浦富側山麓に登り窯を築き、江戸時代に用いられた同じ陶石を生地とし、白磁・染付・黒刷毛を主に現代生活に即した日用品、工芸品を制作しています。再び、浦富の磁器が私たちの生活の中に生きて来ました。

The Uradome Coast is a famous scenic area in the former Inaba province. Porcelain stone is found in a mountain there, nestled between Tajiri Fishing Village and Oguri Beach. At the foot of Ubagafutokoro mountain is a pottery studio. From the Edo Period to the end of the Meiji Restoration, the government supported potters from Izushi to come to work there. They produced painted porcelain for everyday use.
*Izushi is an area famous for pottery in present-day Hyogo Prefecture.
*Inaba province was historically located in the eastern half of present-day Tottori Prefecture. Sometimes, locals still affectionately refer to the area as Inaba.
In March 1971, Yamashita built a kiln at the foot of the mountain on the Uradome side of the ruins of Kiriyama Castle. Using the same porcelain stone used in the Edo period, he began to produce ceramics in line with the needs of modern life. The kiln focused on white, dyed, and painted porcelain. Uradome Pottery was reborn. Once again, it has become part of our everyday lives.

山陰海岸ジオパーク（*）にも指定されている岩美町浦富は日本海に面した浦富海岸を望む美しい土地柄で澄み渡る海の青、漁港に停泊する連なる漁船、釣竿を持った子供たちが学校終わりに各々が見つけた釣りポイントで釣りを楽しむそんな光景が広がっています。岩美の海を初めて訪れた時に地元鳥取県生まれの自分でさえ、別次元の美しさに驚嘆しました。
海辺の漁村から山間に少し車を走らしたところに浦富焼の工房があります。
*山陰海岸ジオパーク
山陰海岸国立公園を中心として、西は鳥取県鳥取市の青谷海岸から東は京都府京丹後市の経ケ岬までの東西120キロ、南北最大30キロの工リアとされています。山陰海岸地域にある地質遺産を保護・保全するほか、ジオツーリズムや教育・研究への活用、地域社会への貢献等を目的としている。
Facing the Japan Sea, the San'in Kaigan Geopark * in Iwami Town overlooks the Uradome Coast. Its majestic landscape is painted with the clear blue sea, rows of fishing boats anchored at port, and children gathering with fishing rods after school. It has all the good vibes of a small fishing town. When I first visited Iwami Town, even as someone born in Tottori prefecture, I was amazed at its other-worldly beauty.
The Uradomi Pottery studio is just a short drive from this seaside fishing village into the mountains.

鳥取県の陶工は陶土を用いて陶器を作る方が大半ですが浦富焼は磁器がメインとなります。先代の山下碩夫さんが陶工の師匠であった生田和孝氏から独立し、岩美町に戻られた際に岩美の土地柄、特色である磁土を使った磁器製作に取り組まれました。当時は鳥取や近県で磁器を焼かれる方は無く、試行錯誤を重ね、登り窯で磁器焼成を始められました。今は二代目の平田俊之さんが継がれ、ご夫妻で日常の器を製作されています。
Most potters in Tottori Prefecture make earthenware pottery. However, Uradomi Pottery mainly produces porcelain. When Mitsuo Yamashita became independent from his master, Kazutaka Ikuta, he returned to Iwami Town. He began the Uradome Pottery revival by producing pottery using porcelain stone unique to the area. At that time, there were no other potters producing porcelain nearby. After much trial and error, they began successfully firing porcelain in climbing kilns.
Seiko Yamashita passed on the Uradome Pottery studio to Toshiyuki Hirata. Together with his wife, they continue to make exquisite porcelain pottery for everyday use.
白磁・青磁・呉須などの釉薬を使った器はもちろん、地元で取れる化粧土をアクセントに塗られて焼かれています。この土地の特徴を生かして表現する色合いが料理の盛り付けを楽しませてくれます。
Uradome Pottery uses white, celadon, and blue glazes made with local clay. When fired, these locally harvested glazes add a unique accent. The colors express the characteristics of the Uradome Coast and add to the visual enjoyment of your dining experience.

存命中に山下碩夫さんにお会いすることが出来なったのですが鳥取市にある" 工芸・集 "さん にて奥様が浦富焼を始め鳥取の工芸の作家の品を紹介するお店をされていらっしゃっるので人柄やものつくりする上での考え方など教示いただきました。お店に伺う度に山下さんの作に新たな発見や見惚れていくのを感じています。
二代目の平田さんの作品は実直で、日常の器として使い手の思いを組んだ使いやすい器が特徴です。収納のしやすさや盛り付ける料理が映える色彩の食器など細かい配慮がなされているので普段から食器棚から選ぶ頻度が高い器です。
Although I never had the chance to meet Sekio Yamashita, I had the opportunity to talk with his wife, who ran a craft shop in Tottori City. This shop introduced Uradomi Pottery and other locally made crafts. I learned a lot about Yamashita's character and philosophy about making things there. Every time I visited the shop, I discovered new things about Yamashita and fell even more in love with his work.
Toshiyuki Hirata leads the second generation of Uradome Pottery. His pottery is characterized by thoughtful designs and usability. He makes tableware you want to take out of the cupboard and use again and again. The colors highlight each dish's ingredients in an irresistible way.
