prefer 〜の方がいい、〜を選ぶという意味では

prefer + to不定詞（to + 動詞の原形）、prefer + 動名詞（-ing形）のどちらの形でも使うことができます。

I prefer to live in the country.

I prefer living in the country.

田舎に住む方がいいです。

I prefer this coat to the coat you were wearing yesterday.

私は昨日あなたが着ていたコートよりもこのコートの方が好きだ。

I prefer driving to travelling(英) / traveling(米) by train.

私は電車で旅行するより運転する方が好きだ。

I prefer to drive rather than travel by train.

私は電車で旅行するよりむしろ運転する方が好きだ。

prefer は rather than と組み合わせる時は、to不定詞 を使います。

prefer + to不定詞 + rather than  の形で使います。

具体的な、特定の状況で使います。

Would you prefer tea or coffee?

紅茶とコーヒーのどちらになさいますか？

通常、would preferには、to不定詞を使います。

I'd prefer to stay at home tonight rather than go to the cinema.

今夜は、映画館に行くよりも家にいる方がいい。

would rather ('d rather ... )

would rather には、動詞の原形を使います。

Shall we go by train? 電車で行きましょうか？

この質問に対して、「運転する方がいい」と答える時、

I'd prefer to drive. 

would prefer なので、to不定詞 to drive を使います。

I'd rather drive. 

would rather なので、動詞の原形 drive を使います。

両方同じ意味で使えます。

否定形は would / 'd rather not + 動詞の原形です。

I'm tired. I'd rather not go out this evening, if you don't mind.

疲れている。もしあなたが気にしないなら、今晩は出かけない方がいい。

would rather + 動詞の原形 + ~ + than + 動詞の原形 + ~ の形がよく使われます。

I'd rather stay at home tonight than go to the cinema.

今夜は、映画館に行くよりも家にいる方がいい。

誰かが〜してくれた方がいいという場合は、

would rather + 人 + 動詞の過去形という形を使います。動詞は過去形でも現在のことを表しています。

I'd rather make dinner now. 今、夕食を作った方がいい。

I'd rather you made dinner now. 今、あなたが夕食を作った方がいい。

誰かが〜してくれた方がいいという場合は、

would rather + 人 + didn't という形になります。didn't を使いますが、上と同じで現在のことを表しています。

I'd rather you didn't tell anyone what I said.

私が言ったことをあなたが誰にも伝えない方がいい。
