English Grammar in Use Unit 77 Names with and without the 1

通常、ひとの名前や場所の名前には、the を使いません。

例として、

大陸(Africa, Europe, South America)、国や州(France, Japan, Brazil, Texas)

諸島(Sicily, Bermuda, Tasmania)、都市(Cairo, New York, Bankok)

山(Everest, Etna, Kilimanjaro) ... 等は the を使いません。

国の名前でも、Republic, Kingdom, States ... 等が含まれる場合は、

the を使います。 

the Czech Republic チェコ共和国

the United Kingdom (the UK) イギリス

the Dominican Republic ドミニカ共和国

the United States of America (the USA) アメリカ合衆国

Mr, Mrs, Captain, Doctor ... 等の敬称 + 名前の場合も、the を使いません。

We called the doctor. 医者を呼んだ。

（名詞の doctor なので、the を使います）

We called Doctor Johnson. ジョンソン医師を呼んだ。

（敬称の Doctor なので、the を使います）

同じように、Mount(山) / Lake(湖) + 名前の場合も the を使いません。

They live near the lake. 彼らは湖の近くに住む。

（名詞の lake なので、the を使います）

They live near Lake Superior. 彼らはスペリオル湖の近くに住む。

（Lake は、〜湖を表す役割をしていて、この場合は the を使いません）

海洋、海、川、運河、砂漠の名前には、the を使います。

the Atlantic (大西洋), the Red sea (紅海), the Amazon (アマゾン川), 

the Nile (ナイル川), the Sahara (サハラ砂漠) ... 等

複数形のひとの名前や場所の名前には、the を使います。

the Taylors (テイラー家)

the Netherlands (オランダ), the Philippines (フィリピン)

the Canaries / the Canary Islands (カナリア諸島)

the Rocky Mountains / the Rockies (ロッキー山脈)

The highest mountain in the Andes is (Mount) Aconcagua.

アンデス山脈のなかで一番高い山はアコンカグアです。

方角を表す言葉の名詞形に対しても the を使います。

the north of Brazil ブラジルの北部

the south-east of Spain スペインの南東

方角を表す言葉の形容詞形には、the を使いません。

northern Brazil ブラジルの北部

south-eastern Spain スペインの南東

Sweden is in northern Europe; Spain is in the south.

スェーデンはヨーロッパ北部にあり、スペインは南にあります。

しかし、north, south 等が国や地域の名前の一部の場合は、the を使いません。

North America (北米), South Africa (南アフリカ)

通常、地図上の地名はtheを使う地名でも、the が省略されています。
