English Grammar in Use Unit 94 Relative clauses 3: whose / whom / where

whose は、relative clause（関係詞節）のなかで、his, her, their 等（人称代名詞の所有格）の代わりに使います。

We helped some people. Their car had broken down.

私たちはひとを助けた。かれらの車はこわれていた。

このふたつの文を関係詞節を使ってひとつの文にする場合、

thier の代わりに whose を使います。

We helped some people whose car had broken down.

私たちは車がこわれていたひとを助けた。

who と whose の比較

I met a man who knows you. （who は he の代わりに使われています）

あなたを知っている男性にあった。

I met a man whose sister knows you.（whose は his の代わりに使われています）

あなたを知っている姉 / 妹 がいる男性にあった。

Whom は who が関係詞節のなかで目的語として使われている場合には、

who の代わりとして使うことができます。

正式な表現なので、通常は who か that を使うか、who と that を省略して何も使わないことの方が多いです。

George is a person whom I admire very much.

ジョージは私がとても尊敬するひとだ。

（whom だけではなく、who, that を使うこともできます。whom, who, that を省略することもできます。⭕️George is a person I admire very much.）

前置詞を、whom の前につけることができます。（to whom, from whom, with whom ... 等）

I like the people with whom I work.

一緒に働いているひとが好きだ。

where は、関係詞節のなかで場所を表す言葉の代わりに使います。

the restaurant - we had lunch there - it was near the airport.

レストラン、私たちがお昼を食べた、空港の近くにあった

これらの情報をひとつに関係詞節を使ってまとめると、

there の代わりに where を使います。

The restaurant where we had lunch was near the airport.

私たちがお昼を食べたレストランは空港の近くにあった。

（この文の場合だと、The restaurant where we had lunchが主語の役割をしているので、it was near the airport の it がいらないのだと思いますが、 it がなくなる理由の解説がないので調べて何かわかり次第補足します）

よく使われる表現として、

the day / the year / the time + that ~ (この場合の that は省略可)

I haven't seen Jack and Helen since the year (that) they got married.

ジャックとヘレンにかれらが去年結婚して以来会っていない。

the reason + that / why ~ (この場合の that / why は省略可)

The reason I'm phoning you is to ask your advice.

The reason that I'm phoning you is to ask your advice.

The reason why I'm phoning you is to ask your advice.
