January 9, 2023: Thousands Separators in Numbers（数字の桁区切り）
When I began to study math, I recalled that the thousand separator varies from country to country. We use commas in Japan but periods in the Netherlands. When writing a thousand in numbers, we express it as 1,000 with a comma in Japan. But the Dutch write it as 1.000 with a period in the Netherlands. I found the difference at the office of my Dutch customer. The customer showed me the sales numbers with periods. I was confused to see them. And I checked with them if periods are used to separate groups of thousands. Further, I asked the customer why. But I was told that periods are the Dutch custom and that they did not know why. I needed the time to get used to them.
However, it is common to use commas in the UK as in Japan. I searched the Internet to get detailed information on the matter. Then I found two ways to separate groups of thousands. One is called English practice. It uses commas and is followed by Japan. The other is French practice which uses periods and is accepted by the Netherlands.
数学の勉強を始めたとき、ふと思い出したのが、数字の桁を区切る際に使用する記号の違いです。日本では、区切りにカンマを使用しますが、オランダではピリオドを使用します。例えば、数字で1000と書くとき、日本ではカンマと使って「1,000」と表記しますが、オランダではピリオッドを使って「1.000」とします。この違いに気づいたのは、オランダのお客さんのオフィスを訪問した時です。売上の数字にピリオッドが使われていました。それを見たときは、戸惑い、千の桁区切りにピリオドを使うのかと確認しました。また、その理由についても尋ねました。そしたら、これがオランダの習慣であり、理由は分からないという答えが返ってきました。これに慣れるのに時間がかかりました。
その一方で、英国では日本のようにカンマを使います。そこで、インターネットで桁区切りについて調べたところ、2つの方法があることが分かりました。一つは、カンマを使う英国方式で、日本も追随しています。もう一つがピリオドを使うフランス方式です。オランダはフランス方式を採用しています。
