February 18, 2022：冬季オリンピック、穴だらけ、日本選手、IOC (Winter Olympics, Lots of Holes, Japanese Athletes, Holes, IOC)
I am excited by the performances of Japanese athletes at the Winter Olympics Games in Beijing, China. Among them is Ayum Hirano in the snowboard halfpipe. His brilliant performance impressed me so much. However, Yuzuru Hanyu and a three-woman pusuit team missed gold medals due to ‘holes’ in ice rinks. The holes prevented them from showing their best performances. They must be too disappointed with the result to sleep well, but I hope that time will heal them.
In the Olympics Games, there was another big hole. A Russian athlete tested positive for doping but was authorized to compete in the Games. It is a big surprise since doping is against the rules. It is a political decision by the organizer of the Games, IOC. IOC sometimes insists on refraining from politicizing the Games. But it is IOC that does so. It seems to have good chemistry with authoritarians like China and Russia.
冬季オリンピックの日本選手の活躍に興奮しています。中でも、スノーボードの平野選手とスキージャンプの小林選手のパフォーマンスは圧巻でした。その一方で、羽生選手も女子団体パシュートは、不運にもアイスリンクの「穴」に翻弄されて金メダルを逸しました。忘れられないほど悔しい思いをされていると思いますが、時間がたてば癒えることを願います。
今回のオリンピックにはもっと大きな「穴」がありました。ロシアの選手がドーピング検査で陽性になったのですが、出場が認められたのです。この決定には驚きました。ドーピングはルールに違反していのです。これは、IOCの政治的決断です。IOCは、オリンピックを政治利用すべきではないと主張しますが、オリンピックを政治利用しているのはまさにIOCです。IOCは中国やロシアなどの権威主義者と馬が合いそうです。
