September 28, 2021ボクの日課: 法務関連文書の英訳トレーニング（1） (Daily Routine: Translating Legal Documents into English)

 A part of my daily routine is to translate a legal document from Japan into English. Every day for the last five years, I have struggled to translate Japanese legal documents consisting of at least 500 letters into English in one hour.
 It all began about twenty-five years ago when I joined a project team and was required to summarize in Japanese and/or translate English contracts into Japanese. Since I was neither a legal professional nor a law graduate, it was a painful experience for me but drew me to a great interest in English contracts.
 After the experience, I had no opportunity to be exposed to English contracts for fifteen years, and my retirement age was approaching. Sometime in the fifteen years, I happened to read over and had a great interest in the book “Knowledge and Practice in English Contracts” by Nobuo Hino and others. Since then, I began to translate the Japanese part of the book into English.

　ボクは、法務関連文書の英訳を日課にしています。毎日、500文字の法務関連文章を1時間で英訳することを課しています。これを初めてかれこれ5年になります。
　ことのはじまりは、約25年前に遡ります。当時、ボクは海外企業の買収プロジェクトに参画していました。法務の専門家でもないのに、英文契約書の和訳や要約をするよう依頼を受け、苦労しながら依頼をこなしました。このときに、英文契約書に妙に興味が湧きました。法学部出身でもなく、法務実務の経験もないのに、なぜか英文契約書に興味が湧きました。
　その後の15年間は、英文契約書に触れる機会もなく過ごしていたのですが、定年が目前に迫った頃に、20年前に買った「英文契約書の知識と実務」（日野修男他著）を読み返してみたところ、改めて興味が湧いてきました。それから、毎日、英文契約書の書籍の和訳を英訳する日課が始まりました。（続く）
