September 17, 2021：ミルの「自由論」と山岡洋一さん (“On Liberty” by John. S. Mill and Yoichi Yamaoka)

 I came across the book “On Liberty” by John. S. Mill when I was looking for books that look interesting on the Internet. The book reminds me of a bitter experience. Quite some time ago, out of curiosity, I entered the translation contest organized by Yoichi Yamaoka, a famous late translator who assigned the contestants to translate a part of the book. When I joined an orientation meeting for the contestants, I found the excellence of other contestants and immediately slunk out of the session. Since then, I had no chance to come in contact with the book, but the encounter with the book tempted me to try the book again.
 I also remembered that I attended his book club for “Wealth of Nations” by Adam Smith several times and learned a lot from him.

　インターネットで面白そうな本はないかと探していたら、ミルの「自由論」が目にとまりました。この本には苦い思い出があります。大昔、名翻訳家の山岡洋一さんが主催された翻訳コンテストに参加したのですが、その課題がこの本でした。大した翻訳スキルもないのに、興味本位で応募してしました。コンテストの説明会で、参加されている方々のレベルの高さに驚いて、逃げるように退散しました。せっかくこの本が目にとまったので、再挑戦したくなりました。
　山岡洋一さんは「国富論」を出版される前に、「国富論」の読書会を開催されていました。その読書会にも数回参加させていただき、勉強させていただきました。
