October 14, 2021： 上原ひろみさん、新作アルバム、強い決意 (Hiromi Uehara, New Album, Dogged Determination)
Hiromi Uehara is one of my favourite jazz pianists. I knew her when I listened to her album featuring a duet with late Chick Corea. In the recent past, she showed her energetic performance at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021. Then in October, she played a recital in New York for the first time in two years, and the performance aired on the News Watch 9, an NHK news program.
The program introduced her new album, “Silver Lining Suite”, featuring a collaboration with a string quartet. I was so much fascinated by the album and have listened to it on YouTube every morning.
At the beginning of this year, she restarted her recital at a jazz club in Tokyo to support people engaged in music. The recital was her collaboration with a string quartet living in Japan since no overseas musicians can be invited due to restrictions on the COVID-19.
She has spent the last two years with her dogged determination to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. ”Where there is a will, there is a way.”
ジャズピアニストの上原ひろみさんは、ボクのお気に入りのミュージシャンです。今は亡きチックコリアとの共演アルバムで彼女を知りました。最近では、東京オリンピックでの開会式でのピアノ演奏が印象的です。そんな彼女が2年ぶりにニューヨークで公演し、その模様がNHKの「ニュースウオッチ9」で紹介されました。
番組では、新作アルバム「Silver Lining Suite」の曲目が紹介された。上原さん自身の作曲によるこのアルバムは、弦楽四重奏です。ピアノと弦楽器との組み合わせが、たまらなく好きで、毎朝、このアルバムをYouTubeで聞いています。
また、上原さんは、今年に入って、音楽に携わる人々をサポートするために、東京のジャズクラブで公演を再開しました。公演開始にあたって、海外の共演者を呼べないため、考えついたのが弦楽との四重奏だったそうです。
上原さんは、この2年を「コロナに負けない」という強い思いで過ごしてきたそうです。「成せばなる」。
