September 28, 2022: Downton Abbey (2), New Technology, Roles in Women （ダウントン・アビー(2)、新技術、女性の役割）
The drama series describes the lives of aristocratic families and their servants in the days of 1912 through 1925. It is full of stories that evoke tears or provoke laughter. One of the families has three daughters. They experience crowded love affairs and marriages as often seen in our time. One of them falls in love with and marries their chauffeur. The three daughters do not get along with and sometimes hate each other. Their servants also have many stories about their lives. Some servants do evil, and others fall in love with other servants. Among them is one who is put in jail.
The drama series sees many events shake the world. First, the World Frist War breaks out, and many members are sent to war, regardless of being aristocrats or servants. After that, the Spanish flu gains prevalence, and some lose their lives.
On the other hand, it sees the phone come into the world, which drastically changes communications. It also sees cars born. It changes transportation from carriages to cars.
It also shows the evolution of women’s role after World War I. One of the daughters establishes her business.
このドラマは、1912年から1925年までの13年間の英国貴族と使用人の生活を描いたドラマです。話題は、涙を誘うモノもあれば、笑いを誘うモノあり、盛りだくさんです。貴族には3人の娘がいますが、現代と変わらず娘たちの恋愛は波瀾万丈です。娘と使用人との恋愛もあります。貴族の家族間の軋轢もあり、更には使用人同士の対立や恋愛話もあり、話題は尽きません。
一方、このドラマの13年間の時代には、世界を揺るがす出来事が起こります。まず、第一次大戦の勃発です。第一次大戦が勃発すると、貴族も使用人の関係なく戦争に駆り出されます。その後にスペイン風邪が流行し屋敷にまん延します。命を奪われる人もでます。また、この時代に電話が誕生し、通信手段が激変します。さらに、自動車も誕生し、交通手段が馬車から自動車へと移ります。
そして、第一次大戦後、女性の役割が変化する姿も描かれています。3人娘の一人は、事業をおこします。
