好きな英語表現#14 Leap Year

好きな英語表現は色々あるけれど、14個目はコレ。
Leap Year.
そのまま訳すと「飛躍する年」だけど、合ってる様で合っていない。
どんな意味？
This February, you'll have a little extra time to get things done − one whole day, to be exact.
2024 is a leap year, meaning we will have a 29th day tacked on to the end of this month. Occurring only once every four years, leap years describe the practice of adding an extra day to the year to align our calendar properly with Earth's orbit. Occasionally, we skip a year to keep the science in check, though we haven't done so since the 20th century.
A tropical year is 365.2422 mean solar days in length. Because Earth’s rotation and orbital period are not linked in any way, they don’t divide evenly. We’re left with that 0.2422 remainder, and that’s the key to leap days.
If we start measuring the day and the year at the exact same moment, at the end of one year Earth will have spun 365 times, plus an extra 0.242 of the way around when the new year begins. After four years, that adds up to 0.9688 day—very nearly a full day. We’ve built up an extra day in the year!
日本語にすると閏年。
英語で何というのか、あまり考えないですよね。
4年に一度使う言葉、忘れてしまいそうですよね。
何故この言葉を選んだのかと言うと、今年が閏年だから。
そして今日がその2月29日。
