This video was recorded four and a half months before the Professor passed away, and it is a commemorative speech when he received the above award from his alma mater, Kunitachi College of Music. It is available on the YouTube channel of the college.
この動画は、先生が逝去される４ヵ月半前に収録されたものです。母校である国立音楽大学から上記の賞を授与された際の記念スピーチで、同大学の YouTube チャンネルにて公開されています。
There was a possibility that he might not be able to attend the ceremony due to his illness and weakness, so the videoed speech was prepared, and which is also actually used in the middle of this speech.
ご病気による衰弱のために出席できない可能性があったため、事前にビデオ撮影されたスピーチも用意されており、このスピーチの途中でも実際にそれが使用されています。
The content of the speech was a look back at his musical life, expressing his gratitude for the people and events he has met during that time, and for the award he received on this day. The story then proceeds in chronological order, starting with his student days, followed by his time as a trumpet player in the City Of Kyoto Symphony Orchestra, his serious lung disease, his abandonment of performing, his recovery, and his transition to teaching, and so on.
内容は、ご自身の音楽人生を回顧するとともに、その間に出会った人々や出来事、そしてこの日の授賞への感謝を表明するものです。 お話は、学生時代から始まり、京都市交響楽団のトランペット奏者時代 ～ 重い肺病に罹患 ～ 演奏活動の断念 ～ 回復 ～ 教師への転身･･･というように、時系列に進んでゆきます。
Also, there is a clip of him teaching music to college students in recent years, and a clip of him participating in the Rose Parade in 2018 inserted in the middle of the video.
また動画の途中には、近年、大学生を指導しておられる様子や、2018年のローズパレード参加時の映像も挿入されています。
In a speech where time is limited, every episode is mentioned only very briefly. However, each sentence and each word is carefully chosen and hearty, making the speech so rich in content that it is hard to believe it is only a ten-minute or so long. Also, because of its brevity, I had the impression that the words had more weight to them.
限られた時間内のスピーチのため、どのエピソードも非常に簡潔にしか言及されていません。 しかし、一文一文、一語一語が入念に選ばれた上、心が込められているため、わずか十数分間とは思えないほど内容の充実したスピーチとなっています。 また、簡潔であることによって、逆に言葉に重みが生まれている印象も受けました。
For example, the sentence, "I felt as if my life had gone completely dark ahead," in the scene where he learned that he had a lung disease, was even more heart-wrenching because it was so short.
たとえば、肺病に罹患していることが判明した時の回想場面における、「自分の人生が、この先、真っ暗になった思いでした」という一文は、短いがゆえに、いっそう胸が締め付けられます。
The reason is that the mortality rate of his disease was not yet low in Japan at that time, besides, even if he survived, it is brutally easy for me, even as a layman, to understand how fatal lung disease can be for a wind musician..
なぜなら、それは当時の日本ではまだ死亡する確率が低くなかった病気であり、しかも、たとえ生き延びられたとしても、素人の私にも残酷なくらい容易に理解できるからです･･･吹奏楽器の演奏家にとって、肺病がいかに致命的であるかということは。

Only three years before his passing, along with the band,
he was walking complete the nine kilometers of the Parade ....
他界されるわずか３年前には、バンドと一緒に
パレードの９kmの道のりを歩き抜いておられました…
After surviving the illness, he started a new life as a teacher. And the school he was assigned to was Kyoto Tachibana Girls' High School, yes, the predecessor of Kyoto Tachibana Senior High School. He established a new club there, and that was the brass band. Then he began teaching how to play instruments to the students who gathered there in response to his call, as all of them were beginners. And later, he introduced something to the girls as a way to give them the basic physical strength to play a wind instrument, and that was, yes, marching.
病気からの生還後、教員としての新たな人生を踏み出されます。その時の赴任先が京都橘女子高校、そう、現在の京都橘高校でした。 そして、先生はそこに新しいクラブを創りました、それが吹奏楽部でした。 呼びかけに応じて集まってきた生徒たちは、みんな初心者･･･よって、楽器を教えるところからのスタートでした。 そしてその後、管楽器の演奏に必要な基礎体力を女子生徒たちが身につけられるようにと、あるものを導入しました。それが、マーチングだったのです。
It is truly astonishing to me that, the birth of the Kyoto Tachibana High School brass band, which would later have a great impact around the world, was guided by the frustration and despair caused by the illness that struck his life. What a, truly, what a "fate" awaited him in his futureーthat had once been "completely dark ahead".
後に世界中に大きなインパクトをもたらすことになる京都橘高校の吹奏楽部の誕生が、実は、先生の人生を襲ったご病気による挫折、そして絶望によって導かれていたことには本当に驚かされます。 何という、本当に、何という「運命」が待っていたことでしょう･･･かつて「この先、真っ暗」になってしまっていた、先生の人生の未来に。
He also says about his musical life, "There were many times when I could not move forward as I wanted" or "Every time I did, my heart fell". He also revealed that he was battling cancer at this time and that this award brought him encouragement.
先生はご自分の音楽人生について、こうもおっしゃっています、「思うように前に進めないことが何度もあった」、あるいは、「そのたびに気持ちが落ち込んだ」と。 また、この時ご自身が癌と闘っている最中であることや、この受賞が闘病への励みを与えてくれた、という心情も明かしておられます。
He always gave the impression of having a gentle smile on his face, but I realize that smile did not come from the fact that his days were going well. Rather, it seems that he had been carrying a lot of weakness and hesitation inside.
いつも穏やかな笑顔の印象が強かった方ですが、その笑顔は、順調な毎日に由来していたわけではないことが分かります。むしろ、心の中には、沢山の弱気や迷いを抱え続けておられたようです。
So, it seems to me that this fact corresponded perfectly with the fact that the students' lives of that band, who had created an unbelievable form of performance that had even been called the 'Orange "Devils",' were filled with tremendous effort every day.
そして、そのような事実は、「オレンジの "悪魔" 」とまで呼ばれるほど驚異的な演奏形態を創り上げた京都橘バンドの生徒の皆さんの毎日が、凄まじい努力で埋め尽くされていることと見事に呼応し合っている、と私には思えるのです。
In other words, it seems to me that it's telling us as follows: "True hope or light always lies ahead on the path of suffering, anxiety, or darkness. So, there' s no need to walk with tears even if such is the path you are on."
つまり、それは私たちに次のように語りかけているように思えるのです。 「真の希望や光は、常に苦しみや不安や暗闇の道の先にあります。だから、たとえ今のあなたの道がそうだったとしても、泣きながら歩く必要などないのです」と。
Isn't that why the marching of that band can easily transcend national borders and ethnic groups and bring a magical energy to the audience?
だからこそ、あのバンドのマーチングは、国境や人種を軽々と超えて、魔法のようなエネルギーを人々に もたらすのではないでしょうか？
Aren't they telling us firsthand that there is enough of a possibility for bright lightーnot darknessーto be waiting for us beyond our hesitation and struggles？
彼等は私達に、迷いや苦闘の先には、闇ではなく輝かしい光が待っている可能性が十分にあることを、身をもって告げてくれているのではないでしょうか？

It says, "Full of Energy! Full of smiles! Full of dreams!"
Many of you may have known these words as the motto of the band, me too.
However possibly, these were originally the motto for the professor himself,
who had his precious dreams completely cut off by his illness.
この言葉をバンドのモットーとしてご存知の方も多いでしょう、私もです。
しかし、もしかすると、これは元々は
病気によって大切な夢を完全に絶(た)ち切られてしまった
先生ご自身のための座右の銘だったのかも知れません。

I believe that if you watch this speech video, you will get in touch with some very important spirit that flows at the root of Kyoto Tachibana S.H.S Band. He doesn't mention it in his own words directly, however I think you would sensed it naturally from his way of looking at and thinking about things.
私は、このスピーチ動画を視聴することは、京都橘高校バンドの根底に流れている何かとても大切な精神に触れることになる、と信じます。 ご自身が直接それについて言及されているわけではありませんが、先生の物事の見方や考え方から、自ずとそれは感じ取れるのではないか、と思うのです。
So we really would like to invite you to watch it, and we sincerely hope that it will be translated into various languages and delivered to people around the world along with the band's performance.

that the irreplaceable person,

after having accomplished the truly great task
of leaving a legacy to the world of the incomparable band.
実に偉大なお仕事の 成果として
あの比類なきバンドを この世界に遺してゆかれました。

( During this 2012 expedition, the band was entrusted with a large amount of
donations for the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake,
by the audience of the concert and other bands participating in the Rose Parade.
One of the important reasons why the huge band of about 200 people was organized
for the 2018 expedition was to express gratitude for those great kindnesses.
"Gratitude" is a word that appears repeatedly in the professor's speech. )
（ この2012年の遠征では、コンサートの聴衆やローズパレードに参加したバンドから、
東日本大震災の被災者に対する多額の義援金が寄せられました。2018年の遠征において
約200名もの巨大バンドが編成された理由は、そういった沢山の善意に対する
感謝の気持ちを表明することが重要な目的の一つでした。
「感謝」、それは先生のスピーチの中にも繰り返し出てくる言葉です。）
