Beyond Odds(可能性の先にあるもの)
Some time ago, I stumbled upon a meaningful quote that resonated deeply with me: “The size of your success is measured by the strength of your desire; the size of your dream; and how you handle disappointment along the way." This quote serves as a reflection of my life's journey, mirroring the obstacles and successes I have encountered.
Growing up in a small town, life was a blend of challenges and strengths. At the tender age of seven, I figured out that only the privileged could effortlessly unlock life's countless opportunities. For those less fortunate, a never-ending path of hardships lay ahead.
Amidst this backdrop, my mother, a hardworking vegetable vendor, became my beacon of strength during tough times. However, she could only be around a few times a month as she worked tirelessly to provide for our basic needs and support our education. The weight of responsibilities rested heavily on her shoulders, as my father's battle with alcoholism cast a looming shadow over our humble abode.
Our home was not a safe place; it felt more like a battleground where I witnessed my father physically abusing my mother. Unfortunately, I also experienced multiple instances of mistreatment. In fact, the memories of his harsh slaps and the painful grip on my hair are still vivid. In those miserable moments, I found myself wondering what it would feel like to have a more responsible and loving father.
These harrowing experiences prompted reflections on my future during my early years. Would I achieve success, or would I find myself repeating the familiar cycle of selling vegetables in the market, mirroring the life I grew up in? These thoughts filled me with fear, especially considering that the idea of going to school seemed like a distant privilege, beyond my grasp.
Despite these uncertainties and the struggles we faced, I held onto a simple belief that tough times were like passing storms, and beyond them, a brighter, happier life awaits, much like the rainbow that emerges after the rain.
With gratitude filling my heart, I proudly reached the end of my elementary school chapter, but c, a cloud of uncertainty loomed. Could I make it to high school against the odds? The question lingered in my mind, bringing a touch of worry.
In a surprising twist, my mom, our unsung hero, stepped up with determination. She worked even harder to make sure both my older sister and I could go to high school. It was a big commitment from a woman juggling a lot, showing her strong resolve to support us. As the behind-the-scenes support at home, my mom became the driving force behind a pivotal change in our lives. The decision to pursue high school was not just about academics. It symbolized a gateway to new possibilities, a chance for a better future.
Upon completing high school, my eagerness to attend college surged. I firmly believed that getting a degree was the ticket to a better life. However, my mom, facing financial constraints from selling vegetables, reluctantly admitted she could not afford to send me to college. At that moment, instead of feeling defeated, I hugged her tightly. It was my way of assuring her that I was determined to find a way to pursue higher education.
At that critical juncture, I felt a profound sense of divine presence. In a mysterious twist of fate, I gained admission to a university without hefty fees. Additionally, my sister, then a second-year college student, and I encountered a compassionate soul moved by our story, offering us free accommodation in her apartment. Overwhelmed with joy and gratitude, we seized the opportunity.
To support myself financially, I applied as a working student at the university. Balancing work and studies was not a walk in the park, and there were countless moments of tears and overwhelming pressure. The temptation to give up persisted, but each time I shut my eyes, I envisioned my mother's weary face, the struggles we faced, the days we went without three meals, and much more. These recollections fueled my determination; I refused to accept a life of chronic poverty.
After four years of juggling work and studies, I finally earned my diploma. As I walked down the aisle in my academic dress, the joy remained overwhelming. It was more than just my victory; it was a shared win with my mom, considering her unwavering support throughout the journey. What made that moment extra special was my father's unexpected hug. Feeling his genuine love and support in that embrace brought tears to my eyes. Despite his imperfections, it became clear to me that my father was a crucial force behind my willingness to push beyond limits.
Now, as a licensed professional teacher, I am living a life that once felt out of reach. It is incredible and makes everything feel so much lighter and worry-free. What is even more surreal is that we can now enjoy meals at fancy restaurants, something I could only dream of before. Even back when I was a kid and asked my mom if we could eat at Jollibee, a favorite Filipino fast-food spot, she always said, "You can enjoy that more when you finish your studies and find a stable job." These moments emphasize why sharing special times with my mom adds an extra layer of happiness. They were dreams we never thought would come true.
Amidst life's challenges, those moments of darkness became the catalyst for my resilience. The journey was not easy, but looking back, I understood that every trial had shaped me and fueled my desire for a brighter future. In this reflection, I believe that the true essence of life's purpose is found in the pursuit and fulfillment of our deepest desires, creating a meaningful and purposeful journey.
