紫根 - 畑に定植 (Shikon - Planting in the field)

滋賀県東近江市で、紫根のポット苗を畑に定植する作業のお手伝いをしてきました。紫は絶滅危惧植物で、発芽率が低いのですが、ここでは毎年上手に育ててくれています。
紫は、冬に赤く色付く根が紫色の染料になります。
美しい色をひっそりと根に蓄えている紫畑を眺めていると、星の王子さまの言葉が思い出されてきました。
『砂漠が美しいのはどこかに井戸を隠しているから』

In Higashiomi City, Shiga Prefecture, I assisted in the planting of Shikon (Lithospermum root) pot seedlings in the field. Shikon is an endangered plant and has a low germination rate, but it grows well here every year.
Shikon is a purple dye whose roots turn red in winter.
As I gazed at the Shikon fields that were quietly storing their beautiful colors in their roots, I was reminded of the words of the little prince.
“The desert is beautiful because they have wells hidden somewhere.”
