草木染との出会い (Meeting with Botanical Dyeing)

私が初めて草木染に出会ったのは、2019年9月に京都嵯峨で開催された志村宏先生のワークショップでした。
糸を染める先輩方に混じり、見よう見まねでストールを茜で染めました。
思いがけず、くっきりとした綺麗な色に染まり、とても嬉しかったことを覚えています。
絹(蚕:動物)と茜(植物)と媒染(みょうばん:鉱物)に人の手が作用して美しいものを作り上げる - そんな世界観に、人としての存在を肯定されたような救われた気持ちになりました。
そして、植物が与えてくれる色の美しさと奥深さにどんどん惹かれていきました。

My first meeting with botanical dyeing was at a workshop given by Mr. Hiroshi Shimura in Saga, Kyoto in September 2019.
I dyed a stole with Akane, learning from the senior staff who dyed the threads.
I remember how happy I was to see the color unexpectedly turn clear and beautiful.
Silk (silkworm: animal), Akane (plant), and mordant (mineral) are combined with human hands to create something beautiful. - I felt as if my existence as a human being was affirmed and I was saved by such a worldview.
And I was more and more attracted to the beauty and depth of color that plants give us.
