The United Nations: Sea Level in Osaka to Rise by 27 cm by 2050 due to Global Warming
On August 26, the United Nations published a new report on sea level rise caused by global warming. The report forecasts that by 2050, sea levels will increase by 27 cm in Osaka and 13 cm in Tokyo relative to 2020.
Japan Meteorological Agency: this summer was the hottest on record due to extreme weather
The Japan Meteorological Agency's expert panel has reported that this summer was the hottest since record-keeping began, describing it as "extreme weather." This summer’s average temperature exceeded the norm by 1.76°C, making it the highest on record alongside last year. The total number of days with extreme heat also exceeded last year's count by over 2,000, setting a new record.
Government to Impose Penalties on Companies Failing to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions
The Japanese government has begun to impose a surcharge on companies that fail to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by purchasing allowances from other companies, while also preparing to introduce additional penalties for those who do not meet their reduction targets under the emission trading system, which will be fully implemented in fiscal year 2026.
This measure aims to create a de facto penalty for companies not actively engaging in climate change countermeasures and to enhance the effectiveness of the trading system.
European Commission Approves €700 Million Scheme for Dutch Livestock Farmers to Voluntarily Close Farms
The European Commission has approved a €700 million aid scheme by the Dutch government designed to encourage livestock farmers to voluntarily close their farms. The scheme aims to promote a more sustainable food system and facilitate a fair transition by allowing farmers in specific regions of the Netherlands to close their operations and improve environmental quality.
This scheme will be in effect until October 1, 2029, and applies to small and medium-sized farms in priority areas designated by the Dutch provinces and around the Natura 2000 network of protected areas in the EU.
