How much money you need to establish an NPO

This article may become a bit short because the answer is simple. Almost free.

As I described in my previous article, if you want to establish an NPO, you have to apply to your local prefectural government. They will not take a fee.

You have to pay to issue some documents to be attached to the application, such as a certificate of residence (Jyuminhyou) for each Governor and Auditor, but they are not expensive. 
The cost will be 300-400 yen per certification. 

When your application is approved and obtained a letter of certification from the prefectural government, you have to register the NPO with your local Legal Affairs Bureau. 
When you set up a private corporation, you need to pay at least 150,000 yen as the registration and license tax, but the tax is exempted from establishing NPO. 

While you do not need any money for the registration procedure, you need to pay some for stationaries.
You have to register the corporate seal (Japanese Hanko) as well when you register the NPO. 
Recently you can order corporate seals online and they are relatively inexpensive unless you prefer to use luxury materials such as titanium.
It is common to order three kinds of seals in a set.
One is the Corporate Representative Seal which is the official seal for the NPO and is used for formal documents such as contracts. 
Another is the Banking Seal to be registered for the bank account.
You need the Banking Seal because many Japanese banks do not accept a signature.
The last one is the square seal, which is used for daily business and informal documents. 
Please do not ask me why it has to be square. In Japan, square seals seem to be formalish. 
The price of the seal set varies depending on shops and materials, but the most inexpensive one is around 5,000 yen, I guess. 
Only the Corporate Representative Seal has to be registered with the Legal Affairs Bureau.
