DESPEDIDA

If you ask me where home is, it is here where I found myself. From the insecurity of my teenage yearsI found myself accepted while traipsingdown its alleys, roads, and streets. I could go on and on, and on down the list-pine trees, protests, artists, activists,paint brushes, performances, popularity, success, heartbreaks…even the smell of horse dungsmixed with the scent of elderberries.
If you ask me where home is,I can tell you every address of the roomsI rented since moving here for college. I can also tell you that they housed 15 boxesof books that I’ve collected for the past 15 years. If you ask me where home is, I will tell you that it told me todownsize the volume of my clothing to fit a medium-sized suitcase. The rest of my jackets, sweaters, bonnets, long skirts, and colourful shirts will find new skins to cling to and protect. If you ask me where home is, while on the airplane I will pointto that mountainous place blanketed with fog oblivious of my heart breaking into pieces.
