総論で、ソー・ロング。

今年はとにかく全般的にAmbientの年でした。

ユキヒロさんや教授をはじめ、敬愛していた音楽家や作家が次々と身罷ってしまったことの影響が大きいし、年々拍車がかかっていく、世の中のけたたましさへの反動もあったでしょう。

ただ、個人的には想像以上にたくさんの仕事、作品を送り出すことができて、今、振り返っても充実した一年だったように思います。

その二つの相反する感慨を、心の収まるべきところに収まるために、音楽はとても役に立ってくれたし、レッドブル的に効くハイパワーな音ではなく、白湯のようにじんわりと体に染み込むローパワーな音の方がしっくりきたのでしょうね。

先日、内田樹さんがヨーロッパや中東で繰り広げられている戦争に対して、《圧倒的な暴力から、制御可能な暴力に縮減させることが大事ではないか》とインタビューで話されていました。ぼくもこの意見に同感です。

なぜなら、Ambientがまさにそういう音楽だからです。フルヴォリュームで鳴らせばただの騒音ですが、それを制御可能な状態に縮減させることで、人を沈静化させる音楽に変わります。その反対も然りで、どんなに良い音楽でも、あまりに音量が小さすぎると聞いていてイライラしますよね。小さな音を耳心地の良い適度な音量に増幅することもAmbientの極意です。

では、たまたま読んでいた本（レベッカ・ソルニット『暗闇の中の希望』）の中に出てきた言葉を引いて、締めくくりたいと思います。

個々人の気持ちや心は変わる。変化した者はお互いに気がつくようになる。勇敢さは感染してさらに多くの者を勇敢にする。「不可能」が可能になる。それは一瞬で起こり、敵対者と同じくらいに、それを実現した者をも驚かせる。そして不意に、思考のような敏捷さで───考え方の変化こそがすべての過程の原動力だった───直前まで圧倒的に見えていた旧体制は蜃気楼のように掻き消える。

BEST 30 OF 2023

30枚のアルバムから1曲ずつ選んで、YouTubeでプレイリスト化しました。
残念ながら、1枚だけYouTubeに上がっておらず（Liam Halliwellの"1"）、同じアーティストがやっている別ユニット（Snowy）が今年出した曲に差し替えています。あしからずご了承ください。

This year was generally the year of Ambient, wasn't it?

Of course, the impact of the deaths of beloved musicians and writers, such as Yukihiro Takahashi and Ryuichi Sakamoto, was significant. There was also a backlash against the growing din of the world.

However, personally, I was able to release a lot of work and pieces, and looking back, I think it was a very fulfilling year.

The music was very helpful for my mind to reconcile the two conflicting emotions and find its place. The low-power sound that seeps into the body slowly, like warm water, was more soothing than the high-powered sound that is like a Red Bull.

Recently, Mr. Tatsuru Uchida said in an interview, "It is important to reduce violence from overwhelming violence to controllable violence" in response to the wars in Europe and the Middle East. I agree with this opinion.

Because Ambient is exactly that kind of music. If you play it at full volume, it's just noise, but by reducing it to a controllable state, it becomes music that calms people down. The opposite is also true. Even the best music can be irritating to listen to if the volume is too low. Amplifying the small sound to a comfortable volume is also the essence of Ambient.
