準優勝者に「おめでとう」は変かも？

男子テニスのマスターズ・モンテカルロ大会はギリシャ出身のチチパスの初優勝で幕を閉じました。

授賞式のスピーチでいつも聞かれるのが、優勝者が準優勝者に対してかける「congratulate」という言葉。

相手は決勝に負けて優勝を逃したわけなので、これを文字通り「おめでとう」と訳すべきではない、という指摘があったのを思い出しました。

「これは祝福というより労をねぎらう言葉です」という説明に納得ですが、ぴったりの和訳をなかなか思いつきません。

「お疲れさまでした」ぐらいのニュアンスになるでしょうか。

When the he delivered a speech at the award ceremony, he spoke to Andrey Rublev from Russia, the runner-up, saying "I want to congratulate you ..."

I remember a Japanese blogger pointed out a while ago that it's not appropriate to translate this "congratulate" into "おめでとうございます" because the opponent just lost the final and missed the title!

She said the winner rather wants to pat the runner-up on the back for his great work during the tournament.

That makes sense to me, but it's difficult to translate this expression into proper Japanese.

Should it be "お疲れさまでした" ? Has anyone come up with a better idea?
