「自分の視点に相手の視点を加える」国を超えた協働で学んだ大切なこと

こんにちは！そして新入生のみなさん、ご入学おめでとうございます。

アイセックは、世界100以上の国と地域​に​支部を持ち​、​約30,000人の学生が所属する非営利組織です。

そんな数ある支部の中でも、今回はAIESEC in IndonesiaのメンバーとAIESEC in Japanの上智大学委員会のメンバーがオンラインで一緒に取り組んでいたプロジェクトについて、インタビューしてきました！

--早速自己紹介をおねがいします！

Hoshi：星絵里香です！今は、上智大学委員会で受け入れ事業部の統括をしています。この夏リモートの海外インターンシップを運営する予定です。

Inra：私の名前はIrnaです。今はアイセックを卒業していますが、所属していたときは財務担当兼法務担当を務めていました！

文化やバックグラウンドが違っても、協働することができると気づいた

ーー今回2人は、海外メンバーとの協働経験を積むことを目的としたプロジェクトで、同じチームのメンバーとして活動していたと聞きました。
取り組んでいたプロジェクトについて、もう少し詳しく教えてもらえますか？

Hoshi：プロジェクトはトピックを自由に選ぶことができたのですが、私たちはマイクロサイバーバイオレンスを選びました。インドネシアも日本も同じ問題を抱えていたことが理由です。

私はチームリーダーとして、ミーティングの設定から議論まで、色んなことをしていました。

Irna：星がアウトラインを作ってくれて、私はスライドの作成などを担当していました。
私はこの役割分担を通して、文化やバックグラウンドが違っても協働することができるんだと知りました。

様々な「違い」を持つグローバルなチームの難しさ

ーー同じチームで活動する中で、難しかったことはありますか？

Hoshi：やっぱり言語の違いです。
私たちのテーマであるマイクロサイバーバイオレンスは複雑な問題なので、それを英語で深く議論することが、本当に大変でした。
チームビルディングにも苦戦しましたね、、。

Irna：私もそう思います。
インドネシアも日本も、英語は母国語じゃないから、コミュニケーションをとることが難しかったよね。
お互いの価値観や文化などをちゃんと理解している訳ではなかったし、ワークスタンダードにも違いがあったので、ミーティングの時何かを伝えることや提案をためらってしまうこともありました。

でもお互いに試行錯誤するうちに、その壁を乗り越えることができたんじゃないかなと思っています。

目標が同じだったから、乗り越えることができた

ーーその壁に直面したとき、具体的にどんなことをして乗り越えたんですか？

Hoshi：私の場合は、Zoomチャットを使ったりして、伝えにくいことはミーティング中にテキストで送ったりしていました。 
日本の他のメンバーも巻き込みながら、理解したうえで協力できるように心がけていました。
Irnaは、日本人やインドネシア人のメンバーとコミュニケーションをとるのが得意なんです。チームのムードメーカー的な存在でしたね（笑）

Irna：私たちのリーダーは星でした。彼女は私たちをファシリテートしながら、丁寧にコミュニケーションをとってくれました。
文化を理解しようとリーダーシップをとってくれて、インドネシアの文化を理解するために時間を作ってくれたこともありました。
その時間のおかげで、私たちはそれぞれの文化を理解することができたし、結果としてチームのつながりを強めることができたと思います。

このチームのよかった所は、目指す目標が同じだったことだと思っています。同じ目標を持つことで、このチームではどんな違いも、壁も、あきらめずに進むことができました。

ーー素敵ですね！この経験から学んだことや得たことはどんなものでしたか？

Hoshi：：グローバルチームでの協働で大切なこととして「あきらめずに行動し、相手とのコミュニケーションを取ること」を学びました。
例えば相手を理解しようと思っていたとしても、質問をしなければいつまでたっても理解することはできません。

このプロジェクトに参加する前は、私にとって他の国の人は特別な存在でした。
でもこの経験を通して、日本の人がいろいろな意見を持っているように、他の国の人たちも同じようにいろいろな意見を持っているのだと実感しましたし、日本の人と他の国の人を分ける必要はないんだと思いました。

あと、やっぱり英語力はとても大事ですね（笑）

Irna：学んだこと、得たことは2つあります。

1つは、英語力が向上したこと。
先ほどもお話した通り、インドネシアも日本も英語を第一言語としていないので、私たちはどちらもノンネイティブです。
アイセックでは英語がどんなに苦手でも、誰も批判をしません。
私の英語を批判する人がいるがいたら、ナンセンスですね笑

それでもやっぱり、思い切って喋ってみる体験は貴重だったと思います。

2つ目は、どのようなバックグラウンドであっても、一緒に活動することができるということ。
私たちはこの期間、同じ目標に向かってたくさん努力を重ねてきて、ひとつのチームとして活動することができたと思っています。

1日だけでなく3ヶ月もチームとして活動することができたのは、本当に素晴らしい機会でした。

他の国のメンバーと協働することは、自分の視点に相手の視点を加えること

ーーアイセックのグローバルネットワークは、どんな可能性を持っていると思いますか？

Irna：そのネットワークを活用すれば、お互いの文化を知ることができることだと思います。
世界中の人が繋がりお互いの文化を理解することで、世界がどのように動いているのかわかるようになると思うんです。

例えば、私はそれぞれの国がどのような教育システムになっているかということについて、あまり詳しくありません。
でも他の国のメンバーと話せば、彼らがどのように何を学んでいるのかを知ることができます。交流することで、より大きなことを学び、自分自身を成長させることができるんです。

これは今の世界に必要なことだと思います。

ーーアイセックに入会を希望する新入生にメッセージをお願いします！

Hoshi：他の国のメンバーと協働することは、今の自分の視点に相手の視点が加わることだと思います。
そしてその範囲は無限大です。

アイセックでは、他国のメンバーと協働する機会も多く、また、直面する課題も多くあるので、そこから得られる成長もとても大きなものになります。
ぜひ、一緒にアイセックでの活動を楽しみましょう！

Irna：もしアイセックに入会するか迷っている方がいたら、勇気を出して一歩を踏み出してみてください。
想像以上に、得られるものは多いはずです。
色んな経験が待っているし、そのどんな経験からも得られるものはたくさんあると思います！

AIESEC is a non-profit organization and  non-governmental organization entirely run by youth for youth. We have about 30,000 members in over 100 countries and regions around the world. 

This time, we have interviewed a member from AIESEC in Indonesia and a member from AIESEC Sophia Committee in AIESEC in Japan about a global collaboration project which will runned from September to December in 2021.

Introduction of members

--I would like to hear a few quick self-introductions and what you do in AIESEC!

Erika：My name is Erika Hoshi. In AIESEC, I am in charge of Incoming eXchange for my LC, AIESEC Sophia, and will be running an online internship (Virtual Professional Program/VPP) in the upcoming summer.

Irna：My name is Irna. I'm an alumni right now. But I was in the Finance and Legal department for my Local Committee. 

We can collaborate even with different values and backgrounds

--What was the project about? What did you do in your team?

Hoshi：We chose micro-cyber violence as the topic for our project. Since both Indonesia and Japan have this same issue, we thought it would be great to choose this topic. I was a team leader for this project. I set the meeting, did research about micro-cyber violence, including real cases in both countries. We actually discussed this issue in the team as well.

Irna：Hoshi made an outline for our project. I helped make PowerPoint. We divided our tasks and through this, I realized that we can actually work together even though we have different backgrounds.

Difficulties of global team with various differences

--What were the difficulties about global team experience?

Hoshi：The most difficult thing was language. Telling ideas clearly was difficult. Since our topic, micro-cyber violence is a complicated issue, discussing it deeply was quite challenging. Also, team building was difficult as well because of the language barrier.

Irna：I agree with Hoshi. Both countries do not use English as their home language. 
We also did not know each other obviously. Also, the working standards were different between the two countries. 
Because of that, we were hesitant to communicate and suggest something in the meeting.
But, as time went by, all the things improved and I was able to overcome that barrier.

ONE TEAM that overcome challenges

--How did you get over challenges?

Hoshi：For me, I used Zoom chat and sent texts in the meeting if it was difficult to tell something. 
 I tried to understand members and try to cooperate with Japanese member in my team . 
Irna is good at communicating with Japanese and Indonesian members. So she was kind of a mood maker in my team haha.

Irna：Our leader was Hoshi. 
She really facilitated and communicated with us. Hoshi tried to understand culture and she conducted meetings to understand our culture. 
By doing that we were able to understand each culture and that foster and strengthen our team works. Thank you Hoshi <33

We managed to work hard for the events. But one thing that was unique for this team experience was that we had the same purpose to achieve. 
By having the same goal, we did not give up all the barriers.

--Please tell us your learning from this experience.

Hoshi：My key learning is the importance of “trying to communicate with others without giving up and taking action”. 
For example, even if I tried to understand other people but not ask questions, I will never be able to understand others. I think before the project, people from other countries were very special to me.
But, after the Born Global LC project, I felt that just as Japanese people have various opinions, people from other countries are just the same people with various opinions. I realized that there is no need to separate Japanese people and foreign people. At last, I learned that English skills are very important, haha.
 

Irna：I have two key learnings from this experience!

One is that I improved English skills
When we participated in this project, English was the only means of communication. But, as I mentioned earlier, Indonesia and Japan do not have English as their first language so we are both non-native speakers. 
In AIESEC, people do not judge no matter how bad this is. 
If someone speaks badly at my English, nono haha.

Second is no matter which background, we can work together.
We were driven by the same purpose with the same amount of effort
Through conducting this project, we were always able to work together as ONE team. 
It was really beautiful.

It was a really great opportunity since it was not one day, but we had 3 months to work as a team. It was a really beautiful experience.

Global network and a vision of AIESEC “Peace and Fulfillment of Humankinds’ Potential”

--What do you think is the potential of the Global network of AIESEC?

 Irna：We can learn about each other's cultures. 
By connecting people around the world gain Cross-Cultural Understanding
We can actually understand how the world works

For example, we don’t know how people learn in each country. But by communicating with members from other countries, we can learn how they learn and what they learn. By interaction, we can learn something bigger and we can develop ourselves. Then, we can be the best version of ourselves. 

I hope after this project, someone who participated in this project may help people teach English or share the cultures of Indonesia in Japan and vice versa. By the global network of AIESEC we can connect to the world and this is what the world needs right now.

Hoshi：We can feel close to the world. As Irna said AIESECer has the same purpose and that is what connect every member around the world.

--Messages to the freshmen who want to join AIESEC!

Hoshi：You can gain knowledge and experience by collaborating with members from other entities.
It will add perspective to your current perspective and will get more more richer as you work together with people from other countries.
In AIESEC, there are many opportunities to collaborate and you can challenge yourself. 
Please enjoy activities in AIESEC〜

Irna：There is no need to hesitate at all. AIESEC gives you everything you are hoping for.
You will gain more than you think. Not just self-development but you can contribute to developing society.
We can learn from all the experience and we gain so much from that experience as well.
